Using a floor vent to bring a solar cable into the van

I have all the bits needed to install a solar charge solution in our Troll 530;
> Renogy 100W suitcase portable solar panel (no controller)
> Victron 75/15 MPPT controller
> Cables, circuit breakers, MC4 connectors etc...

My plan is to install the Victron alongside the CSV-409 in the space under the wardrobe. The question is how to bring the cable from the solar panel into the van? In that space under the wardrobe is a floor vent, which I'm pretty sure is just push fitted (the van is in storage, so I can't check until tomorrow). I was thinking I could buy a spare floor vent, thread the solar cable through it, terminate with MC4 to connect to the solar panel, and when I set up the solar on site I would remove the vent, and insert the spare vent with the cable hanging below the caravan. Then I plug in the solar to the MC4 connectors presented below the van.

This means I've still got a vent in place to allow air/gas to pass through, but the cable now exits the van without me having to cut a hole anywhere.

Thoughts?

BTW - does anyone know the dimensions of the vent? I can't seem to find that item anywhere online.

Andy, I sometimes feed a TV cable or wi-fi booster cable into he van. I bought some soil pipe fittings, made a couple of iroko [teak like hardwood] discs and put a hoe through the floor in the under bed locker. When I unscrew the plugs and feed the cable through I stuff a cotton wool ball into he hole to deter insects getting in.

Andy,

Vent diameter on my 2012 540 is 55mm.

I have a suitcase panel and have turned a 54mm hardwood plug with a hole for the cable and a wider lip which I replace the vent with when using the solar panel..

If the MC4 is connected to the lead, the plug can be split and then glued / cable tied together. Additionally you could drill additional airways in the plug if you have a vented battery.

Colin,
That’s tidy. Nice work.
I prefer to avoid drilling a new hole in the floor though.

That’s great. The same idea I had. I’ll look for a suitable floor vent.

Thank you. 55mm 👌

I picked up one of these from Jacksons or Old Arley today. I'll be installing the whole lot tomorrow. Pictures to come!

Reading back through the thread it seems you plan to remove one vent and fit the new under the van each time you use the solar panel. Is this correct, as if you do the friction fit will soon be lost and it will fall out.

I’ll be inserting the “solar charge cable vent” from above. So gravity will be my friend.

I’m not explaining this very well.

I’ll post photos when it’s done (unless it goes horribly wrong)

OK. I guess you know you will need to do something to seal the exposed raw edge on the hole of the plywood underside to van. It will rot.

I've had a look at my face in the mirror, and gravity is certainly not my friend

I did a similar thing on our '17 Triton which had the conical floor vents under the far end corners and in the floor behind the gas heater. Fortunately the conical insert was removable so I bought a couple via Jandi and just cut a slot in the cone section, threaded it over the cable and just pushed it back into the holder in the floor.
