No not the bank! Thanks to Randas suggestion we are taking the Plymouth - Santander crossing. Does anyone have any recommendations for the 1st campsite, I think the ferry docks about 3.30pm so one that is in easy travelling distance.
Our original plan was to spend our time in Southern France but having looked at photos we are thinking of exploring the Northern Spanish coast, again anyone who has been and can recommend any sites along that coast would be most welcome

I cannot help, but I look forward to seeing how you get on. I've been trying to talk Mrs eribaMotters into doing the crossing, but so far no luck.

Hi Mick. It depends on how far you are wanting to travel from the Port. It's quite easy to get out of the City from the Port but there is a campsite very close to the city. We've not used it but we know of several people who did enjoy it. Camping Virgen del Mar.https://www.campingcard.co.uk/spain/cant...del-mar-125111/

There are five ACSI sites within a short distance of Santander for you to chose from. We've not stayed at any of them. https://www.campingcard.co.uk/campsite/s...eographical:94/

We stayed at one in the city of Laredo on route to Bilbao. It was OK once you have driving through the getto of static tents/caravans/sheds used by people local to the area. Now this is confusing for we stayed at Camping Laredo yet one of the five mentioned above is Camping Playa del Regaton S.L.Cat.2 which is almost next door to the one we stayed at. The beauty of Laredo is that it has large supermarkets nearby and the coastal villages to the east are nice to visit. It's also close to Bilbao and the Guggenheim.

If you want to travel south for a couple of hours then Burgos is a stunning city (El Cid and all that) and has a local campsite which again we've not stayed at.

https://www.campingcard.co.uk/spain/cast...blancas-106624/

We prefered to stay at the campsite at Castrojeriz which is a lovely small village to the east of Burgos. It would appear however that the campsite Casa del Camping is not open at the moment.

Finally, about 1 hour along the coast to the west is a spectacular campsite called https://campinglapaz.com/ where the pitches are tight but the views from the upper campsite are spectacular. The only downsize is because of the steep hill up to the emplacements the staff hitch your van up to their 4x4 and tow and park it for you.
Great swimming beach, great restaurant, very busy with locals driving to the campsite and using the beach at the weekend.

We sailed into Bilbao rather than Santander but our first site was at Islares, camping playa arenillas, between the two. It was a short walk to the beach with a very nice bar (priorities). Nicely laid out, think the facilities were fine. We caught the bus into Bilbao from nearby.

Hi, We have done the same crossing on a couple of occasions and have stayed at Santillana del Mar which is about 1 hours drive from the port. There is a campsite at the top of the village plus a motorhome pull in layby too. The village is probably one of the most beautiful ones we have seen on our travels and we can also recommend the restaurant opposite the fountain near the church at the bottom the village. In fact if you camp on either of the two sites and walk into the village you would pass it.
Enjoy northern Spain it is far better than the Costas in our view.

Hi again Mick. There's a couple on Eribafolk facebook who have just mentioned that they have crossed over to Santander and found this site 40 minutes west. Sounds like they are very happy with it.

I think I'm suffering from a false memory, a la Trump. Do I recall that a meal allowance/voucher system runs on the Spain crossings?

I think I read on the Brittany Ferries website that meal vouchers have been discontinued. Some genius in their PR department claims this is to give customers “more choice”!

For those of you who use Facebook, there is a Brittany Ferries group that may be worth looking at..

https://m.facebook.com/groups/713062376519763/

I’ve been following it for a while as a trip to Spain is in my future and a ferry may be the best option for me.

The group is interesting as it seems peoples experiences are mixed and would also seem to vary from boat to boat..

No need to unplug Mike. Just check that the deck crew haven't applied your Eriba handbrake.
It happened to us once on one ferry crossing.

A little off-topic, but does anyone have experience of taking a dog on the ferries from Portsmouth to Spain? We have a dog-friendly room, but is there coffee facilities etc. at the exercise area? We don’t want to spend the whole journey in the room and don’t want to leave the dog by herself in strange surroundings for too long.

Commodore cabins have coffee facilities. Standard cabins do not. However you can buy takeaway coffees and take them back to your cabin. Ditto G&Ts. We took a picnic dinner rather than take turns at the restaurant. Unfortunately you only have the smallish “poop” deck to exercise the dog. But there are always other dogs so if your pooch is friendly there are friends to nose around with. Our dog is an energetic Cocker Spaniel and she was OK. We did take a toy which she enjoyed eviscerating! One thing to note is that the muzzle rule only seems to be enforced on the way from the car to the cabin. After that most folks don’t bother.
You can also take your travel kettle of course. Modern boats have U.K. sockets. The older boats require a two pin adapter.

We took the cat this year and it's as Kevin says.
Brittany Ferries provide a doggie/cat welcome bag but nothing in there to assist with the animal's toilet habits.
So a poop scoop and bags maybe useful although they may be provided on the walking deck.
Strictly no animals inside the ferry apart from the cabin although as we only have a small cat that we took up from the car in a canvas going to the vet carrier we did take her into the quiet lounge so that we could have a cuppa.
Do dogs use dirt boxes as we took her dirt box in a carrier bag but she didn't use it.
