Towing weight

I have a Skoda 1.6 tdi estate which is able to tow 1200KG braked, maximum. I have seen a Troll, 1200Kg max weight. At present I tow a 1993 Pan Familia which is under 1000KG and very easily towed. What would it be like towing the Troll? Would the car struggle etc. I know the Caravan Club suggest a lower weight to tow.

Eevee, you say you have a Skoda 1.6tdi estate, but is it an Octavia or a Fabia, manual or automatic and what year. The Caravan & Motorhome Club specify 85%, but this is only a guide .If you are not towing a big white wobbly box and have towing experience it is fine to go over this %, as long as you do not exceed the weights on the plate of your car. These are usually found on the A or B pillar, drivers side.
Have a look here for a guide:- https://towcar.info/ As a guide my 2019 Audi A3 150 bhp manual, 2023 Eriba Feeling 425, both with 300kg gives a 4.5 and 2.5 star max. The car tows very well, but I am aware that more weight in the car would be advisable and I only tow at 55/60mph on good roads.

I'm a tad confused, a quick check on Honest John specs say the Fabia Estate used a 1.4 diesel, not 1.6 and that the 1.6 diesel Octavia estate had a towing limit of 1500kg, neither of which match a 1.6 diesel Skoda estate with a 1200kg limit.

Hi

I have a 1.6tdi Octavia 2013 manual 5 speed and would think that the 1200 weight would be a struggle, I have towed 4 different vans since the Skoda was purchased in 2015 and although on the level it is fine it struggles on hills etc over 1000, the fuel consumption also drops to around 32 mpg, also the bhp is 105 !

A 2013 Octavia 1.6 manual has a towing limit of 1400kg and a kerbweight of 1290kg as well as 105bhp it produces 184lb/ft of torque. Its max vehicle weight is 1965kg. Say loaded for a trip it weighs 1600kg plus a 1200kg Troll on the back, making a 2800kg train weight. 2.8 tonnes into 105bhp=37.5bhp/tonne and the industry suggested minimum is 40bhp/tonne, so it will struggle.
On the torque side it's 2.8 tonne into 184lb/ft = 65lb/ft per tonne and the recommendation is 80lb/ft per tonne, so it would be sluggish.

I think we are all guessing on this one as we still do not know what the vehicle is. Can you please let us know Eevee.

Looks like with a 1500kg allowance you are fine with but a couple of the very latest new Eriba's.

It is warranted to pull up to 1500kg by Skoda but can legally pull anything as long as the combination doesn't exceed 3392kg.

That means that if Skoda feel you have towed at more than 1500kg they may well refuse any warranty claim. However that is not a legal limit. The legal limit is the train weight. So legally you could try and pull 2000kg, provided the car weighed 1392kg or less. Whether you'd actually want to do that is another matter but it would be legal.

But it struggles up hill with 1100kgs on so more than that I wouldn't recommend although mine has done 119000 miles ?

Personally I always feel that manufacturers overstate the towing limits and they're not a good indication of how to make calm easy progress with a caravan which should be a couple of hundred kg less. Can you imagine your empty car pulling (1290kg kerbweight) pulling 2 tonnes, leaving aside the stability issues, that's what the legal GTW says it can do. I wouldn't like to be driving behind when you tried it.

That's why I pull a 1300kg MTPLM van (loaded to about 1250kg) with a car that has a 1500kg towing limit.
