Keyless Cars

An interesting report on BBC 1 News this morning about the increase in the theft of keyless cars for export as a whole or for older cars, export of spares.
Now I've joined the folk who unfortunately own one of these silly cars where a key is not a key it piqued my interest especially as a caravan owner. When camping, whether a keyless car owner or otherwise, apparently our cars are all worth "nicking" and if all that stands between your car's "new owner" and you is a flimsy lock on an Eriba........................I rest my case.
In our case we will shortly have to use the open driveway of a relative to park up and sleep in our Eriba for several days so Faraday bag or not, I still feel at risk.

Put a Disklok on the steering wheel, they don't want anything that complicates the job and slows them down.

What goes around comes around Pedro.
French people used to laugh their socks off 30 years ago at we Brits when they saw steering wheel clamps of control pedal clamps on our cars.
Oh, dear, whai is the World coming to?

You'll be fine Roger. Those bags are up to the job.
When I looked at a Volvo XC40 a few months ago I raised my concerns about keyless entry and camping. Things have moved on and I was told when you put the keys down, or they remain stationary for 30 seconds then the car locks automatically.

Maybe you can disable the keyless entry if you're worried about it.

Most of their cars are not worth nicking though and they probably still have the same car now

What a palaver. Nobody has convinced me as to why having a keyless key is better than having a key that you stick in a slot. I've just read that the Mini has an innovative idea and now has rechargable keyless keys. You stick it in a slot in the dashboard. T'riffic.

My Duster has a keyless card, it is useful for finding your car in a large car park or at night time when walking towards the car when the lights come on. It will unlock as you approach the car, however it can be a nuisance if you are walking past with the key card in your pocket and not wanting to drive the car, the lights will flash, doors lock and unlock with a horn beep 🤦♂️.
As to use a faraday wallet I would say if you have a prestige car and the have come to steal it don’t use one, they are going to take it regardless as my daughter found out with their BMW, they had the key in a faraday wallet in a draw in the kitchen, a gang came to steal the car and as they couldn’t use their key amplifier kit, they broke into the house eventually finding the key whilst they were asleep upstairs. Probably a visual deterrent like a steering lock may be better deterrent for the opportunist as it’s going to slow them down.
When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!
Another tale..... I teach a man whose wife has a keyless car. They both hopped in, he to come to his English lesson, she to go to the supermarket. He had the "key" in his pocket, she had forgotten. So, the car started and she dropped him off and went on to the shops. You can imagine the rest. Always check you have the "key" with you LOL

We have a keyless system on our Skoda Karoq and we use a Faraday bag and have a steering lock that I attach in "dodgy areas" eg when I go to watch a Rovers match.
it has the thing where you click on one bit of the driver's door handle to open and another to lock. the other day we were messing about getting things in and out of the car with our grandson ready for the match. I thought I had locked it but pressed the wrong side and left it unlocked - part of my increasing confusion........!
Fortunately my daughter arrived in her car and noticed that the wing mirrors were still out and realised I hadn't locked it. My daughter guarded the car whilst our son ran after me to get the keys and ran back to lock it.
He played hell as apparently I have an app of some kind that I don't use that tells me if the car is locked - I have been incredibly careful since......

True Story..
Back in the 70's my father had a Mk1 Ford Escort. We were holidaying in Wexford and he parked it in Wexford town, did some shopping, returned to 'his' car and drove it back to the house we had rented.. about a 10 mile journey. I walked past the car and noticed that he had somehow changed the colour of the interior .. The poor man near fainted when I pointed it out. So quickly back into the town, parked the car "as near as possible" to where it had been parked and off to fetch his own car nearby. No doubt the real owner was a bit confused on their return to their car. Ford must have had a very limited amount of keys available.
No 'Keyless Entry back then.

It's probably worth getting the hang of the app.
It doesn't just let you see if the car is locked, but also lets you lock it remotely if it isn't.
It'll show you if there's a window or door not properly closed, and which one it is. You can use it to shut the offending window without having to traipse back to the car, but if you've left a door off the latch you're still going to miss the first opposition goal going to shut it, I'm afraid.
It has the odd hiccup like all this stuff does, but you might find it useful.

Thanks Pepe - as usual words of wisdom...................
I always class you as, correctly or not, slightly older than me so it is somewhat perplexing & disorientating to get the same message from yourself as I got from my thirties something son. However you made your points more politely than David..........................
Possibly like others on the site as I get deeper into my 70s I find techy things, that I once found fascinating, to be increasingly mystifying..............we have just come back from a stay in a hotel in Manchester where you needed your little plastic card to do everything. A two minutes wait in a lift frantically pressing my floor number to no avail came to an end when a lovely German couple explained that I didn't press the card on the outside to get in but against a discrete reader on the lift wall. Cleverly it apparently only allowed you to go up to the floor that your room was situated on.................
Well to be fair it wasn't that discrete I just didn't see it..................
We have ordered a replacement Karoq which will arrive in December and I have promised Kath that I will get the dealer to set the App up for me so that I will be able to do the things you describe
Thanks
Mike
