Dash Cameras

Advice needed please.
We've had a couple of dash cameras over the years but we are unsure of the "loop function". We know what it does but thought that the footage would run until the mini USB card is full before looping back and overwriting.
However, in the case of our cameras, that loop seems short although we have a large capacity card (32gb) and the settings on the camera only allow a maximum of 5 minutes before looping back. Is this normal?
Quote from the interweb:- Loop recording works by dividing the video footage into small segments (usually 1, 3, 5, or 10 minutes long). When the memory card is full, the dash cam starts overwriting the oldest segments with new footage.
Presumably the USB card capacity will take more than 5 minutes of footage? I'm unsure about the small segments comment. Can anyone explain please?

Randa, is that 5 minutes in the settings just the maximum recording segment?
Another thought is that recordings initiated by a sharp movement are not recorded over as they may be evidence of a collision. Maybe your SD card is full of those recordings.
I reformat my sd card from time to time as that clears all of those events, and you get the full 32 Gb back.

Hi Roger, it just splits the video into 5 minute files and creates a new one every 5 minutes. That way, when the card is full it just deletes the oldest file.
It’s important to use a card which is rated for dashcam use. The camera is very demanding on memory.

Thanks for your advice so far. Much appreciated
I think the problem I have is with weaking eyesight and very small printed instructions about a very small device with multi-functional buttons, coloured black on black, I struggle to understand or remember what's what with the camera insitu in the car.
I've just purchased a new 240v to cigarette lighter adaptor and have brought one of the cameras indoors to try and make head or tail with it but any more comments would be appreciated.

I have the same issue with mine Roger; never know what to press.
I have the nextbase 622 with a rear camera in the car. I also bought a 522 to go in the back window of the Troll once I’ve made a bracket for it.
All this was really in reaction to our mishap last summer; when I went to look at any footage from my old cheap camera, it turned out that the memory card had faulted and wouldn’t work at all. Couldn’t even see it with any of my laptops so no evidence there.
TBH, once you have it set up as you want, there’s only really the button to save an incident that you normally need.
I have mine set to show the speed and nothing else once I get going.
Hopefully, I’ll never need to use it; a bit like paying for insurance.🙂

I question should you be driving? is the dash cam facing the right way????
