Towing Covers for an Eriba

There's a lively discussion going on on Eribafolk Facebook at the moment about towing covers and front bike racks.

This is a comment made by Specialist Covers Representative Dom Howlett

Hi all,

I work for
Specialised Covers, and I just wanted to address the bike rack openings on the Towing Covers. As the Eriba towing cover is a new product for us we are still adapting and learning all the additions that customers may have. Historically, our towing covers for other caravans have never had bike racks so we never had this as an option.

What we have done is introduced this as an option on the product page on our website, so that we can cater to everyone’s needs as we continue to learn what is necessary for our products.

One thing we will have to do is send out a dimension sheet to those that select a bike rack, just to ensure we are positioning the opening in the correct place, as there will be variations to bike racks and fixing points. This is just to ensure we provide the best service we can and a product that is perfect for customers needs.

Meanwhile, this is the mod they did for Eribafolk member Simon Parker.

I'm at a bit of a loss on this one Roger. The small bracket fixed to the waist line of the van would imply that bracing arms are used with the cycle carrier. I was not aware that the Eriba carrier had bracing arms. It is a Thule Superb [Short] model, a variant of which I have fitted to my Feeling, and this does definitely not have or require bracing arms.

I have just taken ownership of a 2024 540 with a bike rack and this fitting is, I was told, simply for a small strap to go around the top horizontal bar of the rack to secure it, i assume to prevent it folding forward inadvertently. There are no bracing arms.

Thanks Colin and Sparks for your contribution. As an owner who doesn't own a cover or a front bike rack for that matter, I just copied and pasted parts of the debate that is currently going on on Facebook. I decided that there was enough comment to justify passing the debate to this forum as well.

You may have seen recently that Protec have stopped making "standard" Eriba towing covers. Well, they have now been taken over by a company called Specialised Canvas and have moved to Chesterfield. Is that the same company as Specialised Covers? Could be a bit confusing if not...

No, they are two separate companies and yes this had made things very confusing. I had to do a double take when placing an order with Specialised Covers to make sure that I was dealing with the company based in Shipley and not Chesterfield! Cover now received and fits well.

This is Automotive Leisure and Adventure Leisure all over again. It’s too confusing 🤪

I was the one who put the original post on Facebook about Specialised Covers (Shipley). Our towing cover is now back with them and they have agreed not to charge me for the modification (£40) but I have had to pay £36 for the carriage back (included £400 of loss protection).. Our new Eriba 540 has a webbing bridge for the bike rack which I think is just to give the horizontal bar some stability (especially when loaded with 2 bikes).

Yes it’s very confusing that Specialised Canvas chose that business name. The Specialised Covers product seems very good quality with the Vintex material.

Peter, when convenient, any chance of a photo of the carrier in place to show the webbing bridge. I cannot visualise it.
I've used a Thule Express clamped to a towball mounted on a plate at the front on two vans and currently have the front folding Thule Superb, but never needed to use a top brace. I did make one for the Express but soon realised it was not needed.

Hi Pete. So what you're saying is they are seperate companies? How strange is that ! So, just to clarify, is it Specialised Canvas of Chesterfield (not Specialised Covers from Shipley) that took over Protec and are they a new company or have they been around for years?
