Jacking for skates

Hi all

I little advice re jacking please?

Due to a difficult drive/car port I'm thinking that storing my 530 on dollies would be a good idea for access to both sides. I'll need to park hitch first so I cant use the car to steady for jacking. Apart from chocking the other side and putting the handbrake on are there any suggestions to stop the caravan pivoting? Any movement in either direction will be painful!

Thanks in advance

It sounds precarious, store it somewhere else?

Hi Mat. Not quite sure If I'm on the right track regarding "dollies?" Can you explain further?

Anyway, if your jockey wheel has a notch at the bottom of the telescopic leg which fits into a fixed pin. it shouldn't swivel when fully compressed.

As far as the Eriba handbrake is concerned, once the brake is applied as far as it is humanly possible, you need to then push the van backwards with the brake on and the handbrake lever will click a few places up until it parks itself in the vertical which means the brakes are fully applied.

Boat Winch

I have read on several occassions over the years that folk who need to park their Eribas in the garage "nose in" have resorted to a boat winch fixed to the back wall or floor of the garage and the Eriba is wound in. If the winch is left hooked up then it should also give extra stability.

About 12 years ago we had a boat winch passed on to us by Eribafolk Member Frantone and this winch is a bit special as it has a tow ball fixed to it. We use it now and then instead of a mover to get us out of tricky situations.

So you live a little and learn a lot ! First: the boat winch and tow ball : looks a simple but effective piece of kit. I have both items in the shed doing nothing, must get a piece of flat bar and join'em up.
Second: Apply the handbrake and push the 'van back until the handbrake lever clicks over to vertical.. well I never !! I have a pair of leveling thingies.. I tried to use them once and lost patience after a few attempts, I couldn't get it to perch on top, so I hitched up and moved to another pitch. Sod that I figured. Typical man, if all else fails, read the instructions ! I will have to figure out the sequence of towing the Eriba onto the leveler thingie, applying and locking the handbrake ( as per above instruction ) and uncoupling the car, praying that it doesn't roll off. Still sounds precarious. A bit of practice methinks, like reversing is a straight line

OK, I've got the picture now. Park the Eriba, jack it up onto "dollies" something like these:- Werbung: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204051510456?...r8aApOHEALw_wcB (Is 1500lbs , 680 kgs per wheel OK?) and preferable lock the dollie wheels from spinning so they only work side to side?)
The cradle shape of these dollies will stop forward and back wards movement. Interesting project.

I've been thinking about how to safely lift the Eriba and my mind keeps on going back to Formula 1 car jacks. if one was made up long enough and wide enough to go from under the axle to the rear of the Eriba, it might take two persons to lift the van but could it work or am I dreaming?

Take something like this. The lifting handle would need to be cranked to get it under the van and the lift only needs to be about 100mm (the geometry will need to be worked out to see if you can get an approprite lift as the rear of the Eriba is what? about 400mm above ground so 400mm download would have to lift 100mm at the axle. The axle end will need to be a cradle to hold the axle.

We've even used our boat winch to pull our Eriba off a muddy pitch backwards. Fit the tow ball to the front and pass the winch strapping under the van and attach to the car. Gently does it. Easy-peasy. The French campsite owner was well impressed.

It seems to me that you would need a pretty level, smooth surface for the dollies to work, since you will have no brakes to rely on and the castors will catch on small pebbles Etc.

We used a tow rope once in Dijon so we could pull our 540 off a waterlogged pitch while keeping the towcar on the gravel path. The jockey wheel was locked at 90 degrees as I had forgotten to raise the front and it did a good job as a plough! Even with Low-diff 4wd it’s best to avoid the mud sometimes.🙂

Thanks for all the interesting ideas. I've got block paving so perhaps that will scupper the project for now; the winch is a good idea though!
