Security devices for 81 Puck
Security devices for 81 Puck

Wow, every decision I need to make seems to have so many different options. I know nothing.
Now it's insurance. For my about-to-be collected 81 Puck, I need a security device. What would you guys recommend? Hitchlock or wheel clamp or both? And what sort fit?

My insurers require both at all times that the van is unattended so this includes in the garden at home, on a camp site and in the car park of a motorway service station if we both go inside at the same time.
I don't know about hitch locks suitable for a Puck of that age (I'm sure someone will) but I use a Milenco wheel clamp like this Milenco Compact which is very quick and easy to fit and remove.
Everyone has their favourites so expect to be inundated with conflicting advice.

Hi Herby. Like Aaron Calder, we use both.
Regarding wheel clamps, there are past discussions about these on this forum and here's the link :- wheel clamp
Please not that there are also links within the link.
As for a caravan hitch lock it will depend on whether your Puck will be fitted with an ALKO tow hitch or not. If it is, it may already come with an ALKO hitch lock. If however the Puck has just a standard tow hitch then there are many locks to choose from. Here's just a sample of what's on the market http://www.towsure.com/category/Hitchlocks

Hi Herby, personally I would go for both! However put some thought into a stabiliser if you don't already have one, a wheel clamp will do for the short term, but if you go the stabilser route whatever you buy now won't fit that! You can buy stabilser packs ie stabiliser and hitch lock to fit either new or second hand. Just trying to help and make sure you get it right first time

As there are extremely few reports of Eribas being stolen I would go for the minimum policy requirements and the easiest device to use.
In fact I I would go so far as to suggest that any devices are purely deterrents and a determined thief would take your van if they wanted it whatever precautions you take. And as Eribas are so distinctive and unattractive to opportunist thieves I would take up an insurance policy that had less requirements than others.

Hiya Herby hitch lock wheel clamp and also our puck a 2000 has also a lock built into the hitch itself don't know if yours has that. I know a lot go missing over the years as they are a small brass barrel that fits into the hitch. If your hitch has one and the brass barrel is missing you can buy them from Jandy I think for around £16.00.

Quote: Morphy wrote in post #8I have one on my trailer that I bought from Halfords. It fits into a keyhole-shaped hole in the hitch and prevents the handle being lifted fully to accept the towball. They are easy to lose and I'm on my second.
