(a light should come on on the keyboard when it is engaged) If you can answer 'yes' to both then the method I described will work.
I have several times and get Google
PS Just turned my Num Lock off and I get Google so that's your problem, Derek.

But what is that key? it's got 2 blue arrows poninting at each other? Is it the NUM lock? It seems an easy way to Google. Caps Lock is fairly obvious

Windows8 for dummies doesn't give any clues either. Thanks for your patience Brian
Had various tries with the zip too and the heat application didn't budge it, the pliers looks like it might ruin the zip itself, even the long nose ones and the 90 degrees fiddle and lots of muscle and fiddling failed too. Looks like we have to live with it.

Having supplied thousands of keyboards in a previous employment and being a smartarse earlier in tbe thread, try f6 on some keyboards there is no numlock button as such and f6 usually does it if not listen to these °°°

From memory and was a while ago I think it's just f6 to switch numlock on then f6 again to take it off It may not work it depends on your keyboard (even qwerty keyboards come in different configurations) which is silly as it is supposed to be "the industry standard"

First question, Derek. Does your keyboard have a separate numeric keypad at the extreme right side? If not, the Alt method will not work.
If you do have a numeric keypad, you need to switch it on by pressing the 'Num lock' key. When you press this key a light will go on (or off) on your keyboard. You want the light to be on.
Next simply hold down the Alt key while typing 0176 on the numeric keypad and when you release the Alt key the degrees sign will appear thus: °
Pressing the F6 key has no effect on the numeric keypad on either my PC or Mrs C's laptop.

Thanks for your ongoing support chaps.
The numeric pad is there at the RH side. The num lk key is on the top row above the pad, it also has home on it. Pressing it brings no light or distinguishes one.
I did phone the shop who sold me the laptop and the chap there asked what version of Word am I using, I ansered haven't a clue. If I type a document I use Open Office Writer which is simpler and not the complicated Word system, but I only use it for letters and stuff like that. Typing on this forum and others is more used and important. It can't be this website as you are using it.
Pressing the home/numlk key takes me back to the top of this thread page.
