awning light question

after asking otherhalf to debunk to see why solars not charging (above 12.5 normally 14 at that time in morning) on the recent rally, battery at his side of eriba. and later finding out the cause was the awning light was left on by him,.

thinking of changing the awning bulbs to led ones to reduce energy used and heat build up

problem is haven't got a clue which bulbs to buy, think we have 501? capless halogens? at the moment

is it possible to buy capless 12v led bulbs?
where is the best place to purchase??

if Oh is going to leave light on must deplete the energy used

If I understand correctly the awning light only works on hookup to prevent it being on in transit.

Therefore leaving it on at night should not draw power from the battery ...............unless your van thinks the solar power is a mains connection? Even so (not understanding how it tells if mains is hooked up) I would not expect it to work on battery?

this awning light works on battery, the eriba is used normally off grid. we don't use light while travelling.

when OH leaves light on it draws power from battery, hence wanting to change to led bulbs

edit: just realised my reply has come across un-friendly did not mean that to happen,

not really wanting to get into a large debate on whether the light should or shouldn't run off battery.

although for any one who doesn't know Hob is correct it shouldn't work on battery.

So if its the built in awning light presumably the wiring has somehow been altered to make it work. or are you using an awning light separate to the built in one?

its the original light, always worked, assume altered at birth when factory solars and inverter installed for original owner, who may of asked to be completely off grid.

Have a look at this old topic it might be useful

12v LED bulbs

Also I never took my awning light cover off as its cracked and I don't want to disturb it while its working so I'm not sure what size bulbs are lurking underneath.

I wouldn't pretend for a minute that what I put in the other thread about awning lights was gospel. Far from it.

I was under the impression that it wasn't supposed to work when there was no mains voltage present, but it's entirely possible that this is a wheelbarrow full of cobblers.

Does anyone know whether their awning light still works if the van is hitched - and connected - to a running vehicle?

A far as I know - and that's turning out to be less by the minute - this is the principle of a habitation relay; i.e. a relay which cuts power to the interior lights and the awning light so that none of them will work when the rig is mobile, thereby preventing you from driving down the M1 at night towing a lit chandelier.

It might be that whether the awning light works only on 240v or battery as well is a red herring...

I dunno.

Does anyone else?

Can't answer that but after the discussions this morning I re-connected the battery on our Troll and the awning light does work without mains hook up so probably your line of thinking that there may be a car hook up cancelling arrangement is a good one.

new bulbs arrived today
got some warm white as well as the white ones, I prefer the white.
decided to change some of the internal halogens, these bulbs fit nicely until you get to the washroom lights, the prongs are just a tad long, and were adjusted
the bathroom light white part,( do not try pull the blue part from the shiny plastic it has 2 great big springs glued) the white part was persuaded out near the two swivel points with a flat bladed screw driver, then the front was persuaded apart near the swivels, which then allowed the silver shade to come out to replace the bulb. will post pictures in gallery of removal..
always wonder how these came apart

I didn't bother with the bathroom lights as they are never on for long.
