Trailer Tents

I briefly made mention the subject of Trailer Tents to Roger in a recent PM and promised to get back to him with some details of a model we recently came across. However, as this may, in a roundabout way be of interest to other members, I've decided to post in the forum instead. Trust you're happy with that, Roger?.

Anyway, on our way to the pub one evening we spotted a couple of new arrivals on the site who just happened to be grilling outside leaving the entrance to their Trailer Tents open for everyone to view. I say Trailer Tents although at first we didn't know what on earth they were being so taken back by the shear size of them and the internal luxury they were presenting when viewed from the outside. Being nosey, we enquired as to the manufacturer and before you could say boo to a Goose we were invited inside for a look-see. My OH and I were gobsmacked by the huge amount of space - both living and storage - the standard fittings and especially the blown-air floor level heating. In terms of internal space I feel that you could easily have packed two of our Tritons inside and with the additional (extra) Isabella awning which simply zips in there was enough space to play football. What amazed us even more was the cost and both of us said, simultaneously, that had we known about these before our van purchase we'd probably not have gone ahead as you could have bought two of these Trailer Tents for what we paid for our Triton. OK, enough of the waffle - the OH has now found the brochure that she was given and here is the website for those interested in looking if nothing else. We particularly like the Countryman version:-

Deeps, they are fine but you cannot pack them away damp. They also need you to be fit and strong!!!

We had one before purchasing our Eriba - had it less than a year -absolute night mare ! Hard work, cold, can't put away damp or wet and lost 100's £, no 2nd hand value ! We still have 'the shakes' even seeing one !!!!!

Thank goodness we saw the light and got an Eriba :) :)

All points taken onboard although not too sure about the putting it away damp or wet bit which surely would apply even to anything caravan related. I've just spent the best part of a week cleaning everything following our return from holiday. This included unpacking the awning (incl. curtains) and spreading them out of the garden in order to ensure they were 100% dry. The awning didn't get rain wet during the trip but upon packing up the day was damp and the air saturated with moisture so went through the laying out in the garden exercise just to be on the safe side. I can't believe for one moment that this exercise of ensuring everything was thoroughly dry would have been any harder had a trailer tent been involved although of course I've never tried it.

Heavy depreciation - OK, I'll bow to your experience as regards this.

I was tempted to buy a Dandy trailer tent, they have a solid front and back, blown air heating and can be but away wet. I still think you can't beat the Eriba..

Some years ago we had a Conway Cardinal. Being low it was easy to tow, though somewhat wide. It had a caravan type metal roof and you used a sort of crank handle to wind it upwards on telescopic supports! When set up, yes, it was lovely and roomy with comfy beds, an oven and a four burner hob. it needed a practised routine for getting it all set up and put away again. It attracted lots of interest and we got audience applause when it all tucked away! But it was heavy work lifting the panels round the loo, and pulling out the sides and you couldn't put stuff away in the wardrobe, or leave the beds made up in transit 'cos it folded down! It wasn't that warm on cold nights and there were the usual problems with the canvas when it rained heavily. And if you put it away wet it all had to be set up at home to dry out. It pushed away nicely into the garage for the winter but you couldn't go inside to check it unless you took it out and set it up again. And then one March we found that a family of mice had been living in it all winter! The mess and smell were awful and they had eaten much of the side canvases and bed curtains though luckily not the electric cables or gas pipes or the upholstery except a tiny hole in one mattress which I repaired with a matching scrap of curtain. No insurance claim either because the damage was caused by vermin. Luckily a firm in Manchester was able to replace the canvas and curtains. We thought the same thing might happen again so part exchanged it for our first Eriba at Letchlade. I know which I would rather have now!

We. bought a Conway Canterbury back in the early 90's and enjoyed years of camping both home and abroad we also bought the wardrobe annex, the Living annex and the Sun Canopy it was huge and packed up very neatly into the trailer, we called it our Canvas bungalow We often took it down wet but it was simply a matter of putting it up at home on the front garden on a fine day to dry it out. We had the erection off to a tee between us but the pegging out took forever. However the final straw for us which lead to our purchase of our 1st Eriba was when we were literally blown off site on two consecutive occasions about 10 years ago, the 1st near St Ives the 2nd on The Gower, On the 2nd occasion the wind was so strong it ended up breaking the steel frame of the Living annex, We came home on the Saturday and had bought our Triton on the following Tuesday. We really enjoyed out trailer tent which we sold on E Bay and sometimes miss the space it gave us but wouldn't be without our Eriba now

Mick's post reminded me that when we met in Provence last year, there was a chap arrived on site with a trailer tent who nearly drove me mad with all the hammering and banging as he pegged out all his guy ropes. It seemed to go on all day.

Not for me.

That's right, Mick. It was a massive thing that we could comfortably have parked both of our Eribas in.

I had some computer problems during our last few days in France so I was unable to upload pictures to finish off the tale. I'll do it over the next couple of days.
