Looking back over the last 8 years we've not used the van for trips after the first weekend in October, although last Christmas my son and his fiancée used it on the drive as we'd run out of beds indoors.

We've used ours when visiting relatives in t'North in January and March in sub-zero conditions and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Truma Ultraheat conversion that I fitted really makes all the difference as you can leave it on at a low setting all day and all night if required to keep the van warm and welcoming.

There's something magical about being all snug and warm in the Eriba when the weather outside is grim.

Why not have a city break somewhere and give it a go?

For us, being retired, we use it as and when we can, sometimes the weather stops us, but not that often, we are laying up soon however, but thats due to preparing for winter hibernation but if the weather holds we are away again in November. It can be warm in winter and cold or rainy in summer so we just go on the "spur of the moment" unless as has been the case with Baltic Wharf CC site you have to book early to stand any chance of getting on.

We are looking to "hibernate" for a period of 8 weeks or so, as I have some work to do at home And we have a seriously ill close relative.

We covered ours last week. No more trips planned for this year.
Last year we went to Harrogate in November which is the latest we've ever been away. Although we quite enjoyed it, it was getting dark at 4:30pm so the evenings proved to be a bit too long for us.

Had one trip the week before Easter a few years back. I woke up one morning and stumbled towards the loo at the front and thought it was odd that the ceiling was touching my head and getting touchier with each step. Then realised the top had popped down at the forrard end, due to the weight of snow on the pop top.

Hi Keith, Ive just come back from York Rowntree CC, the weather was great, we were going to go to Grange over sands on the 1st November but we have decided against it and will now start the wintering of the Familia....
If you do go away like was already said try a site close to a city/town at least you will have something to do in the long dark evenings, York Rowntree CC is brilliant and only 10 minutes walk into the centre, unfortunately it is that popular you have to book 12 months in advance

definately agree with the city breaks, and this is why we frequented Baltic Wharf so much. It makes all the difference if the weather is good obviously but when it's bad having a city within walking distance is very handy, you save on parking costs to.

We are going to try York and Chester at some stage but there are others to, Oxford, Henley and Cirencester park etc spring to mind, maybe not CC ?

That's why we use either the CC Beechwood Grange site on the A64 ring road or the private site at Naburn Lock depending on opening dates. Both are close to park and ride facilities which we find very convenient. One problem with the Rowntree park site is that it is vulnerable to flooding. We had to cancel our planned trip there earlier this year when the Ouse rose over its banks in the city centre.

Join the club Keith, ours will be under cover soon. Carole just does not fancy cold camping. Inside is OK but the loo trips, the outdoor trip to the car, the poss of rain therefore what do we do with the wet gear if not using the awning etc.

I've just remembered 2 more close to city centre's Bath Marina, and Cardiff (I think it's Bute Park?) but it'sconly a 10 minute walk to to the Millenium Stadium along the banks of the Taff River. Both have good and bad reviews on UK Campsite but unless you try you really don't know

Your right with that one Brian, we went two years ago and it started raining very heavy two days before we were leaving, two days after we had left the river Ouse had burst its banks and the site had to evacuated to York race course by the back gates. Unfortunately a few caravanners had been drinking all day and the local council had to help shift some of the vans....
