Not all 420s have the single/double bed option, Taffy.

Ours only has a (huge) double but when I had to spend some time in it alone a couple of years ago, I found that I could make up one side of the bed and use the opposite bench and table as normal.

You can always put heavy gear in your car. We tow with a convertible but even with the roof down (reduced boot capacity), we can still get the full awning, a folding table and lots of miscellaneous kit in. The unused rear seat is also used for carrying stuff that we can't or don't want to put in the caravan.

If you use a Calorlite propane bottle and make sure that you empty the toilet flush and the cold water tank before towing, you will substantially reduce the laden weight of the van.

I have found a website that gives the weight of a 540 as 930kg. Does anyone know what the average weight of packing would be. I don't travel with everything and the kitchen sink but a bag of clothes few cooking items, gas bottles shade brolly, wind blocker for a screen but no awning although a pull out sunshade on the can would be nice but I fear that may tip me over the 1050kg towing capacity of the vehicle I have my eye on.

Hi Taffy.
Is the 930kg the unladen weight of the newer Troll 540? I think I'm right in saying that figures quoted by Hymer do not include extras such as battery packs, motor movers, hot water systems etc. so you have to be very careful when you're looking at a suitable van. Do others agree regarding the brochure figures?
Probably the best thing to do is to try and weigh the gear you propose taking with you before you decide on a van. Most of us don't get that opportunity because much of the gear we carry remains in the Eriba all the time.
What vehicle are you thinking of using to tow the Eriba and have you used this website http://www.whattowcar.com/ to confirm that the proposed vehicle is up to the job?
Obviously within reason, it's always better to have a car that's a bit of an overkill when towing a caravan as it's useful to have that little bit of extra to get you out of trouble. As an example, we started towing our Troll with a 90bhp Ford Focus 1.6TDi Estate which was fine but the Touran we now use, although not as economical, does a better job.
What is the opinion of other members?

Some time ago, Steamdrivenandy published an Excel file to help people calculate their caravan weight. I'm sure that Andy won't mind if I attach it to this post.

Here it is:
