Not ever been a snapper or whatever but I have just bought a Canon Powerhot and that's far more complicated than the Olympus point and shoot that has done OK for me for many years. However it was cursed with the battery forwver going flat even when I bought new ones. Just got to learn how to use it. Simple needs really, mostly to do with my paintings.
Here's the latest with the new camera thing.

I take the batteries out and charge them, labeling the spares with the date charged.
This stops me putting flat batteries back in the camera.

Compact camera's tend to be power hungry little beasts and because of their small size tend to get their power from 2 x AA batteries

Rechargeable batteries are by their make up 1.2 Volts each and standard batteries are 1.5 volts each .........so

Rechargeable batteries 2 x 1.2v = 2.4 volts
standard batteries.........2 x 1.5v = 3 volts

So rechargeable's are at a 20% disadvantage even before you put them in the camera.

The Canon compact that I have says in the instruction book not to use rechargeables for that reason, it follows (being on the power hungry side) that the best quality standard batteries are the thing to use.

Note batteries deteriorate with age and are date stamped by law so check when buying them that they are not "old stock"

Tip After using them in the camera batteries are still at about 1\2 power when the camera rejects them as no more good .................don't throw them away (recycle them) as they will power less hungry gadgets like wall clocks and remote controls for a considerable time after the camera rejects them.
