to clamp or not to clamp

I have bought a wheel clamp from Amazon (it was quite cheap) but when I undertook a brief search and some anecdotal comments I have heard is that the theft of Eriba's is relatively rare. Having looked at the gallery I can see that quite a few people use clamps.

is the apparent theft of Eriba's rare because of the diligence of owners or as I have been told their singular nature make then easy to spot on the roads.

Whilst I don't want to open a Pandora's box of scare stories and tales of misery but I would welcome anyone's comments on the use of clamps.

If you already have one why not use it...............some insurance companies insist on them before providing cover.

For the sake of what a clamp cost, it's not worth going without. Yes, Eribas are rare, and easy to spot. They're also both desirable and reliable, so you can bet your life that someone might pinch it.

Apart from that, my insurance co. wouldn't cover Morrison unless he was protected boy either a clamp or a hitch lock. So, belt and braces, I got both. Now if he's pinched, at least I tried.

I have a hitch lock as well which seems easier to use, my question regarding the wheel clamp is does it have to be an approved? I just bought the first one I could find. Its a bit of a fag to fit and (as the years are getting long) I certainly have a horror of driving off with it still attached!!

+1 on the clamp, and hitchlock.
Would be really annoyed if the van got pinched, and I hadn't made the effort to make it at least a visible
deterent to put off a potential thief. Ian.

I know what you mean. I have to get down on all fours to fit it. And then get a hand to stand up again! But no, I don't think it's necessary for the clamp to be "approved". Any lock will be a deterrent. The CC insurance certainly did not ask for a specific approved type. (Having said that, if the clamp was an Al-ko then I would have got a discount, but that's another story. Mine isn't an Al-ko!)

Right click on the pdf file in the first post on page one in the link below and save it to your computer .............print it off and refer to it every time before you move the van .....................that's what I do

With regards to the clamp being approved, I suggest you check the small print on your insurance policy......mine just says to have
a wheel clamp fitted (nothing specified) So I got the easiest one for me to fit, that being a claw clamp, which is also light weight.
However, some require an approved clamp, which are generally heavier, and more awkward to fit plus more expensive.
You pays yer money, and takes yer choice. Ian.

P.S. with regards the fitting of clamp......mine always goes on the door side, so I can see if its still on as I get in the driving seat..............Ian..

I usually fit mine the other side so it is visible if I have an awning fitted.................
