Help regarding telly

Yet again we had a power surge at 4:50am Monday the 12th, all the rcd clicked off, (last time this happened we lost the dishwasher, electric sewing machine and kettle)
the telly was plugged in to surge protector but powered off no light, unfortunately hadn't got round to buying an rcd for this power socket outlet. there was a bright flash from telly 4:50am
as you've probably guess the telly has been frazzled beyond repair,
a lovely neighbour has lent me a 10" screen portable while we source a replacement its plugged into surge protector and rcd
tonight we watched marbles being played with a stick in bigger screen telly terms snooker
amazing how young people look without been able to see close details
been looking on the long river site and got brain overload
need some help
our services here are one electric wire and a water pipe both intermittent, the internet is a dongle
the last telly lcd 26" had a remote, a sleep turn off feature, programme guide, scart socket and the red yellow and white connections, at its creation it was a low energy version.
the brain muddles
which are the good brands?
am I right in thinking a smart telly would be a waste as we don't have wifi, and they don't work with internet dongles
would talking to a telly be a sign of going mad?
somehow got muddled between hd, full hd, 3d, 4k, oled and what they mean
just want to watch a sharp picture screen without ghosting, with good sound well under a price of £500 with a screen size above 10"
would a 12volt telly be better long term running off eriba or pedal cycle instead of national grid.
any help or advice great fully received
P

We are toying with a bigger Tv size, up to 32" and better sound, but trying to avoid the as expensive sound boxes ( another rip off?) Will wait till Carole gets back from her ski trip week on Sonday then look and it seems to be John Lewis this time.

We make do with an old Nikkai 10" screen (I think) certainly not very big at all. We can now also use the tablet providing we can get a signal, which so far since having it we have😎. We only watch telly as a last resort when we are away as we are always doing other stuff!! I'll say cleaning before someone else does😎.
If we change the Nikkai (which is multi voltage, 12v, 24v, 110v, 210 - 250v) then we would go for a simple tv / dvd combo 18 to 24" would be sufficeint for us I guess. These days stereo or at least twin monaural comes pretty much as standard as for smart tv's we have that at home, and we ALWAY'S have the tablet with us.
BTW my Samsung tab s £15 a month for 15gb usage (But I had to haggle hard to get that) far more convenient than a £15 per month phoneline!!!!

In that case for home we have a 42" Sony smart tv which replaced our old Samsung after it went wrong! We bought the new one from John Lewis at Cribbs Causeway Bristol, due to price match and additional 5 year warranty. We have it freestanding on our cabinet and we are very pleased with it. The choice is yours and it is a bit of a minefield but we can recommend the Sony.

Thanks Gray. that's a bit big for our small coattage, but we will check. I do want a decent make. Have LG at present but realising at my tender years the sound is rubblish so I don't have much patience with the drama stuff and I do enjoy some of them.

Sounds like you still have a main fuse box (old fashioned type with fuses) if so consider having a Consumer Unit fitted to replace it....................it could pay for its self by not losing any more equipment

Regarding buying a new telly, go along to a shop that sells them and have a look at them, talk to the sales person they usually have a good idea of what is what.

You should have no problem getting up to about 34 inch for less money than you think, Have a look at store websites like tesco, currys, john lewis
to get an idea of what is available and prices.
I bought a new one for Christmas (a big one) and found if you get the model that is not the latest but the one before the latest the price is lower. The one I got was about 1\3 cheaper than when it first came out.
As for smart tv I find using mine as a smart tv is a pain so an HDMI lead to my pc is much easier than trying to use the built in stuff................the smart tv connects wirelessly to my broadband router

would talking to a telly be a sign of going mad?
Very probably

HD or HD ready as it was sometimes called was sort of halfway between ordinary and full HD
HD or high definition is pretty much standard these days
4K is better than HD (so they say) and requires the tv to have a large onboard processor similar to the computer ones (if I understand it correctly)
LED most newer tellies have led screens nowadays.

its amazing all this new tech stuff.
the home electric usage has gone up with all cakes baked since old one passed. hehehe we wont mention waist line
we have some errands to run, hopefully will be able to view some soon.
our last telly used to go up and down in sound when first new, was something to do with avl been switched on, again have no idea what this means, but may help.

Just a word on something Nev (hob) has mentioned, I only thought of it after seeing his post. HD began to be shown a few years ago, at that time we had Sky and when they rolled it out you could immediately see the difference and at that time we had a non hd tv (as did most). Now with 4k filming it is possible to see even more detail, great on things like wildlife etc. Do remember that unfortunately in this digital age everything is moving very very fast and from what I see on tv even 4k is being superceded and that's before we even have it.

I am happy with the vision on most tellys to be honest, just the sound on ours. We have a 100£ rubbish one for the Eriba and that's Ok fo what its worth

Hi Derek I have the same problem with some programmes ,I think it's bad sound quality on the program not me or my tv ,the tv is six or seven years old and not comparable with a sound bar ,I would need a new smart tv for that so as my picture is good I am sticking with it.
