Puck lighting fault

Hi All, Any advice most welcome.
With no side lights on indicators, brake lights work fine. Turn side lights on everything comes on including marker lamps, then o/s car lights GO OUT and N/S sidelights on van GO OUT. Indicator and break lights still work.
I have fitted a new plug and checked all the bulbs to no effect.
I have also tried a 'white board' on the car all works fine.
Thank you David

A few details, what make of car and year of caravan, I assume it is a 13 pin connection? Do you have a multimeter

Hi, Thanks. The car is a Fiat Panda. The plug is the standard seven pin affair. I don't have a multimeter, but can obtain.

Looking at it logically

That should eliminate the car electrics.

Presumably to the end of the van lead where it plugs into the towbar ? (either 7 or 13 pin)

If you had the same fault before and after fitting the new plug the fault is elsewhere...............

The lead on the van should if you follow it back go to a junction box under the van...........that would be where I would look next.

Hi, Many thanks. The van is 22 years old. I have not seen a junction box. Would one be fitted on that age of van?
Thanks David

The cable from the tow bar must meet the van electrics somewhere, I know there is a box underneath on later vans ........certainly worth getting under to see where it goes? My 25 year old puck never had any connections or fuses for the lights inside that I could find.

Could this be an 'earthing' problem somewhere ? Only apparent when there is a full load on the circuits. and the current finds it's easiest route ?

Hi, I have looked underneath the van there is no sign of a box the cable is in good condition ,running to the rear where it then seems to go into the rear body, to service rear lights, no sign of fuses on van.
Thanks David

Hi, Many thanks. the matter is a nightmare! All attempts seem to be thwarted. I have cleaned the earth which is attached to the n/s marker, all to no avail.

looking at pictures of my puck you should have 7 bulbs..........2 indicators 2 rear lights 2 marker lights and a fog light.

Try taking the bulbs out one at a time while trying the lights you might find where the fault is that way.

Hi, Thanks, That may be the problem. In the rear n/s lamp holder is a loose blue wire ,taped off. I assumed this was for the fog light and I thought these were no longer used? If it is where should it connect.
Thanks for your interest.

The fog light should be powered from another 7 pin plug .......a grey one

this page shows where the lights work on your black 7 pin plug

http://www.towingandtrailers.co.uk/shop/132/133/142/

Do you have any service history for the van? if not consider having the van serviced by a caravan service company ............for gas safety check wheel bearings and so on they will probably sort your wiring at the same time.

Hi, Thanks for your advice. The van has some written history, given its age I may have to look into your suggestion.

As Ribski suggests, this sounds like a common (white) earthing cable problem to me. It used to happen to me a lot with camping trailers. Have you tried running a temporary separate earth wire from each light cluster to a local earthing point to see what that gives you?
