No phone .................no parking

More and more non mobile phone owners are being excluded from all sorts of things, last year I could not join a photo sharing website because i didn't have a mobile number.
Last month I couldn't help set up my brothers new broadband connection because he doesn't have one either.

I agree that it's very irritating if you've no real need for a mobile, but technology takes no prisoners in its relentless advance.
I know that it goes against the grain - been there and done that - but there are inexpensive solutions like buying a sim-free mobile and getting a free pay-as-you-go card for it.
There are phones around for about fifteen quid so the upfront cost is relatively small and beyond that you only pay for what you use.
When it comes to having to put a mobile number into the registration gubbins for a website, just make one up.
As long as it's got the right number of digits in something approximating the right format it doesn't matter. Nobody will ever ring it anyway, and even if they did and it wasn't you who answered, they wouldn't rescind your access.
These websites don't have people whose job it is to ring up the numbers and check that they're for real.

Will a cheap phone run the apps required for these payments? or do you have to have a smart phone that costs a lot and has monthly payments?

There are a lot of pensioner friendly "smart" phones but none I have seen
admit to being able to use apps.
I noticed the Amazon "Fire" on a special offer of £99 (save £300?)

You often don't need an app, just a number, the cost will be added to your monthly bill OR taken off your credit on a payg, if you don't have enough credit you can't park! I can even do it from my tablet, which is part of the reason I have one they can do so much, I hardly ever pay to park so I' m not that bothered by it, Dunno what all the fuss is about anyway we moved on from threepenny bits to decimal easily enough, we are the human race so we can kill the planet and sod the expense!

In the case of the car park having to pay twice.............once to the car park and once to have the phone so I can make the payment.
And where will it all end? It's getting to the stage where you will not be able to get by without a mobile .........so what happens to all the people who can't use one or afford one?

I understand and appreciate your concern Nev, but we are in the opposite camp because we would like to not have a landline at all and just use mobiles!

Even people using food banks have mobiles, there are even people who give their old stuff away to needy people (rather than selling it on ebay) I know I'm one of them.
Find another place to park? It's what I do, I very seldom pay to park, people do it for convenience or laziness!

It's OK for you city slickers but the only way we can get a mobile signal from our home is to either go into the back garden or upstairs and lean out of a window. We also have a very erratic internet signal and terrestrial TV is beamed in via a relay mast from, of all places Pembrokeshire. This is despite there being a huge TV mast overlooking the city of Swansea and an Orange (or whatever they are called "today") phone mast about 2 miles down the valley.
It's just that unlike our next door neighbour down and the rest of the village who don't have the problem, we are tucked just too far under the slope of the hillside and forest to get a clear signal.

I don't give out my home phone number as it is Ex D,
I don't use my mobile much so don't give out the number.
The problem is many websites demand one or the other
or both for membership, even online retailers want more
information than a lot of folk want to give out. Some of it is
for legitimate security but I suspect the rest, like phone numbers,
are for resale

I've done it umpteen times. I've never had a thing pop up to say 'It has to be your own number, Pal. You can't make one up'.
Yes you can.
