Protecting the car

Looking at the big wraparound bumper on the back of the car while hitching the van last year I thought it would be very expensive to replace if I damaged it (it also has parking sensors)

With that in mind I purchased a protector which I happened to spot on a stall at the steam rally I went to last September which was on sale for about a fiver.

Today being a nice day and now I have the torque wrench to do the bolts up properly I decided to fit it.

With me reversing to hitch with no-one to guide me most times it should make damaging the car a little less likely (hopefully)

Another thought has come to me (they come slowly these days)

If I mark a piece of wood just above ball top height and set the hitch cup base to that level I should be somewhere near the right height before I reverse.

Bloody hell, hob. We've just had 3 pages worth of discussion over whether we should be carrying torque wrenches around with us or not. Have we now got to add a piece of 4 x 2 to the inventory?

It won't work with a removable tow ball either (I use a foam rubber kneeling pad between tow ball and bumper) but I think Hob has come up with an excellent solution to his particular problem.

Nice one, Neville.

Back when I had a Toyota, imported from Japan, as a campervan, it had a great mirror, on an arm, on the back of the rear door, which could be adjusted to show the back bumper and space behind, so the driver could see behind, at the rear for reversing into a space. It could also be trained on the tow ball.
I have also seen them on the Mazda Bongo campervans. Could be worth looking at, Ian

My wife uses hand signals that would even confuse racing pundit John McCririck when I'm trying to hitch up.....l

The Al-Ko Soft Dock is designed to provide some protection to the towcar whatever type of towbar is fitted.

I haven't used one so I don't know how effective it is.

There you go Nev :- http://www.hitchhelpermirror.com/ or a UK one:- http://easyhitch.co.uk/mirror.html

Many years ago (before the great flood) I used to use a tennis ball on a bamboo stick x 2 stuck on the back of car and caravan tow hitch with plasticine. Things have moved on a bit since then ( should have patented it ) but a couple of years ago I recommended these to a young lady Puck owner and she found them to be fabulous:-
Westfalia Hitching Aids and you can now get something similar with flashy flashing lights :-

Yep. No sooner than you've found a method of checking the tension on your nuts, then you have to think long and hard about flashy balls
