Tembo Kontich

Not a small caravan but the smallest this company has made. It's a one off, designed and built by the owner and his team. The elderly married couple are currently on a campsite with us in Dieppe.

Here's the story.

When they were young, these Belgians were part of rival Touring Circuses. Eventually they started working for the same circus but shortly afterwards it closed as did many others at the time.

They had a friend who worked for Barham and Bailey who was responsible for building and repairing their circus caravans so they decided to start the Tempo Kontich caravan company specialising in very large, expensive builds. Only a few a year.

This tourer built in 1993, is clad with 14 gauge aluminium fixed to oak framework. The van is almost 1500 kgms, Sorry, I missed a lot in translation.

The one idea I loved was a lockable sliding drawer just above the outside table, that slides out to expose a three burner gas cooker and a single induction hob.

He and his wife showed me many photos of their large caravans and also some photos of when they were in the circus together.

THE MUSTARD POT

Rebecca off Eribafolk Facebook was a little dismayed because she could never quite find an Eriba that fitted her bank balance so has bought one of these. A lovely little British Classic, a Sprite Compact. Thanks to Iain Mortimer for finding this video :-

There's something a bit wheelie-bin about it.

I hope this post isn't found to be too far off track and uninteresting to you all. I am in Minnesota at the moment and noticed an 'RV' show in Minneapolis at the weekend. It actually turned out to be more like a large sales event for 'Camping World' a huge dealer in the US. There were a couple of novelties there which showed the beginnings of a move away from the larger offerings.

Coleman Rubicon

A tiny thing, rather spartan inside with a kitchen set up beneath the lifting back panel

Happier Camper

Another tiny offering.

But of course, if you want the more traditional offering, this is a mere 44ft lomg...

List, this is $166,000 but you can probably find one discounted at around $135,000

The second picture is of the tail lift that allows you to load your 4 wheel ATB or just use it as your porch. The 4th picture shows the entertainment centre with TV at the top and fireplace at the bottom...

It should be remembered that 'caravaning' in the US (the term caravan is not known) is very different from our experience. Such things as the Fuzion above are probably put on a site for extended periods of time and used as a permanent home. They are particularly used by people who have a mobile employment lifestyle or have 'gone south' for the winter. The small ones are weekend escapes. But there are plenty of sizes inbetween...

Bailey Discovery

We saw one of these in Cornwall and had a long chat with the delighted owner. It's a chunky bit of kit to be sure and seems to be well though out.

SM IMG_5111.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

The owner is 6' 3" tall and the rear washroom/shower is large enough to accommodate him. It's a lightweight tow and is one of those vans that you can get a wrap around awning for and look at the price compared to an Eriba Touring.

See my comments on a bigger one we saw two years ago:- Bailey Discovery

Here's one I've never heard of before. The subject cropped up on Facebook Group "Not Another White Box" recently.

It would appear that yet another Small Turkish Caravan Manufacturer is currently ripping off the design. https://adalifekaravan.com/

I invited myself into one of these just now. I'll add a few pictures later when I've processed them.

Nice little caravan owned for three years by a friendy middle aged couple.

They are absolutely lovely, but the compromise (for us) is we would have to set the bed up every night and a canopy/awning set-up is an afterthought. Oh, also EXPENSIVE.

Also, and I've just noticed that on the first page of the website where they are proud to be British, scroll down a little to be confronted by the Union Flag represented UPSIDE DOWN, sorry
no but completely wonky in it's design which makes it UPSIDE DOWN any way you hang it.
I despair of these people who are supposed to be designers and have an eye for these things.

Just emailed them as a disgusted Welshman. These guys are supposed to be from the Cotswolds. About as English as it comes.

A fully loaded Famila 320 could be that sort of money and you would not get a useable bathroom.
