Toilet matter!

Aldi has some blue diamond pink additive stuff and blue toilet clearer on offer, 5.99 can anyone say if it's decent stuff as a few reports are mixed on caravan google sites. Also do I need special toilet paper or can the normal household toilet rolls be used in the loo in the eriba.

I wouldn't worry about what you use; they all do the same job which is basically to mask the smell. Poo gosh! The contents won't be in your holding tank for long anyway.

Just use normal paper but when emptying at the disposal point, make sure that the grid is raised and all will flush away as normal. After all, it will all either be going straight into the normal mains sewerage system or into a septic tank or cesspool for later emptying by tanker.

We bought the Aldi stuff last time it was on offer and have no complaints.

Out of interest, what are the negative comments?

We use normal bogpaper too, and have never had any problems. I reckon that the expensive special stuff is an utter swizz and not worth it at all.

As far as the liquid in the holding tank is concerned, mine and Mr Cauldron's views diverge somewhat. We'd used good old-fashioned formaldehyde-laden Elsan Blue from the outset but made a decision to try something a little cheaper the last time we needed a fresh supply.

It was green rather than blue, and that was pretty much the colour of my face when I came to emptying it.

It's not a question of being squeamish about these things; I used to have to dig Elsan pits and empty brimming bucket toilets into them without a care in the world when we were on archaeological excavations in days of yore, but the smell from the van tank with this cheap(er) green stuff was rank.

I mean it really honked.

Worth spending a bit more on decent stuff, I reckon.

And if you've got any left over, it makes a good substitute for woad.

It's always been a rule with us the NO number 2's in the caravan you go to the site's facilities for that.

No number twos in my eriba, only little tinkles if needed in an emergency! But as I will be on a field in August with only one loo and sink will use eribas washroom. Not yet christened it so need to get some of the stuff to replenish the tank. Will try the Aldi stuff. Thanks all.

Instead of giving charcoal tablets to the dogs you should try eating some yourself.

I've just checked the labels on Elsan Double Blue and the Blue Diamond product sold by Aldi and both contain formaldehyde.

The green, non-formaldehyde stuff is supposed to be more 'ecologically friendly' than the blue (which usually translates as 'not as good as the product it replaces') and is said to be preferred by rural campsites with septic tanks and malodorous surroundings.

Today's report on BBC News that more than half a billion people in India still defecate in the open puts this question into perspective.

I use the cheap toilet paper from aldi, the more expensive stuff tends to be three ply which swells up and can stick like paper mache to the inside the cassette.

Only no 1s in our throne, no 2s are for the site facilities for a burial at sea.....

Indeed so.

I don't want to give the impression that we use our van toilet for big jobs with gay abandon, because that isn't the case at all. If the site has 'em, we'll use 'em.

It'd be daft not to, since there's no point making campsite jankers more onerous than they are already.

The thing is we couldn't have stayed on that lovely site in Devon the other month if we'd had a no poo in the van rule because the site didn't have any toilets.

We feel like we would be limiting our choice of site by staunchly refusing to use a caravan toilet for its intended purpose, but, as ever, it's each to their own.

Quite right.

I think people's reluctance to use the Eriba toilet for big jobs could be due to our toilet compartments not being sealed from the living/sleeping area unlike those in fixed roof modern vans.

Not my interpretation of 'lovely site' but, as you say, each to his own.
