Travel Insurance

We have free travel insurance with our bank account. I have just noticed that the maximum cover is 45 days. As we are hoping to get away for longer next year we will probably have to buy some. What do others have, any suggestions.
Julie.

A very expensive one we're afraid
Since our extended travels we have opted for Red Pennant which do appear to be the favourite on many.

If you don't mind me asking, how much is very expensive? The "free" bank account costs £15.50 per month so my maths makes that £186 pa I think. As that is the only benefit that we use from the bank if I changed to a basic current account I would have that to put towards the premium. Is Red Pennant only travel insurance or does it include breakdown cover as we already have that? Provided there is some left for the "booze" fund it is worth considering

Red Pennant is motoring and personal insurance and is the best package we can find. I got my renewal notice this week for an annual, multi-trip policy (any number of trips of up to 31 days each). Cost £264.10 (gulp!)

They also do up to 45 and up to 66 days policies but four weeks at any one time is enough for us.

I had to use them once (when I dragged the cable on the road) and they were superb.

Just did a quote online and got the figure of £418 (multi trip up to 66 days) ouch. Plus we would have to join the club so there is the membership to add on. As the max appears to be 66 days that's not going to be long enough for the Randas or Blueyonder is it? What I pay the bank and the RAC arrival equals £304 so there is a bit of a gap, it's just the 45 days (with the bank) max that I have to sort out somehow. It's never easy is it

Have you obtained a quote for a single trip?

No that's a thought, just get cover for a long trip. That might solve the problem. Off to fill out all the questions again!

As Brian has already said, Red Pennant is motoring and personal insurance. The main reason we use them is because they are the only insurers who have given us a straight answer in writing stating that if the car has a breakdown even if separated from the Eriba, they will repatriate both.
This year we paid £273 for 67 to 94 days ( single trip) for two persons. Obviously we couldn't do the annual multi-trip because of the length of time we expected to be away.

That makes sense Roger, missed that option on the internet, not good with technology . So I think the sensible answer is to wait until next spring and then if we need longer than the 45 days go for the Red Pennant single trip option, probably without the breakdown cover as the RAC Arrival (through the C & CC) covers the car and Eriba even if they are not together at the time.
So many options, think I need a drink. Have to be coffee sadly as I have to collect the youngest from the train station at 23.40 (shes been to Budapest for the Grand Prix, such a hard life being a soon to be employed ex-student).

I know, it's bad, really bad, the sooner that girl learns to drive the better. She passed the theory last week so she is getting there, mind you she would get there quicker if she wasn't jetting off to foreign parts

Have you thought about getting in touch with your 'free' insurance company to see ifc over can be extended for an additional premium. I have the same with NatWest but being ancient I can get the cover needed with an additional premium - say around a £100. Just a thought.

What about the house insurance on top of that, most policies only cover for 30 day unoccupied and you have to pay extra to extended it to 60 days!!

I think a lot of people conveniently forget about that.

The schedule to my Aviva buildings and contents policy contains the sentence: "You have confirmed that the home will not be unoccupied for more than 30 consecutive days during the period of insurance" but I assume that if a relative or friend were to spend a night or two in the house while you were away, this exclusion would not apply?

Thanks folks for the heads up. May well consider asking the bank if they will extend the period for a fee. Our house insurance (with Saga) covers us for 60 days so I guess that will be the limit unless I can get daughter to stay overnight, shouldn't be a problem, she moved in in May, temporarily, when her relationship broke down. She is still here, for another month or so and we are still sleeping in the Eriba on the drive. Would sooner lend her and her young son my bedroom than my Eriba.
