Although we've been with Towergate/AA for seven years, on the strength of the excellent service Saga has given to Eribanaut and Julie Grafo in the past 2 years, we decided to change to them last week.

Easy to deal with, a quote slightly cheaper than Towergate and we also raised the fixed replacement price in view of the current second hand prices.

We have also just changed our insurance to Saga and was offered the 'new for old' as our van is 15 years old this year and they would give us this for the next year only. We duly paid as the price was good and waited for the paperwork to arrive. When it arrived I decided to look through the small print and it said the van must be serviced yearly by a certified company. Was a bit worried about this as we have it serviced at home by a caravan engineer. I phoned up and was told we were only covered if we had a receipt on headed paper, with a company registration number and the person carrying out the work was qualified. Also in an event of an accident we would have to produce 3 consecutive yearly service bills. Well, our guy knows what he is doing but alas is not company registered, so was a no goer for us. We have since changed to second hand value only and Saga credited our account with the difference.

How did you manage to get the quote that low?

Out of interest, I asked for a quote on Quotemehappy. Skoda Octavia 1.8D, No claims, ever. comprehensive. £570 +

Interestingly despite everything Saga say in their paperwork they wrote our van off without seeing it, just took our word for it. They also paid out the full value we had it insured for, don't know if we were lucky with them or if that's how they deal with all claims. They never asked for any paperwork of any sort.

Just checked mine with Saga as renewal is in 30 days. Last year paid £202 for market value £13K, £200 contents, £2K awning, legal aid, euro cover 190 days.
Renewal is quoted at £229 so phone call will be made shortly. Will have to up the market value as AL are selling my van for £15K .

Following on to my van insurance renewal I have contacted Towergate online for a quote. Went through all the questions only to find they were unable to quote !!!
However left my number for them to call me back. Sure enough call came through and sent another 20 minutes going through all the questions I had completed online. Upped the value of the Troll to £15K from £13K with Saga and fully expected a big hype in premium. Surprise surprise Quoted £160.27 compared to the £230 from Saga.
Will contact Saga to see what if anything they will offer but doubt it as £70 difference.

Be aware...we couldn't find an insurance package that covered cameras or laptops left in the van. Regards Chris

You are probably better off getting cameras, laptops etc covered on your home contents insurance in the "away from home" section. That way they are coverd in your caravan or in the car or out in the field as well.
