Just had a huge shock

not electrical wise, although that might of been easier to sort
no its the envelope that popped into the letterbox this morning, and should of come with a warning.
its the Eriba insurance quote that dropped on mat, while I don't usually disclose prices think this needs discussing because something must be wrong

the quoted cost is a whopping £1,023.00 with deductions £600.82 for a cost of a replacement of £17,125.00 which is only the basic eriba 540 this price is apparently supplied from the manufacturer,
seems the quote company who sent me this without a request, does not take into account this is the basic model, and options are what make the eriba different from other manufacturer's.
all sockets, wheel flaps, autonomy pack, are extra options and need calculation to get the proper caravan price which have not done mainly due to the shock..
no contents are in the price

the eriba has all the do dahs and is parked in the correct place, in a low crime area,
so why is the cost so high??

am sure ive read other quotes on forum for newer models being a lot lower
know insurance companies have had it rough over last few years but even so.....

many thanks for any contribution to this thread or and guidance

Is this a renewal quote?
Which company is this? It seems a ridiculously huge amount.

We've just had ours too but can't make a straight comparison with yours as ours is insured for a fixed amount being an older van, the amount we paid for the van.
We are paying £183 which includes taking it overseas and it is exactly the same price as last year.

Our is not with Saga Amanda. We tried Saga and although they quoted us less, it didn't include cover for abroad. When we added that on it came out more expensive.
We are with Towergate through the AA.

Saga never even thought of whoops gosh
I actually meant that most owners of caravans, my limited research being from the rallies last year, no matter how I write this its going to come out wrong, perhaps I shall not carry on

I don't mind sharing my insurance quote which I have just renewed this week. It is with the caravan Club, they are aware that a bare standard Familia is about £14,300 but as you said that doesn't take into account the delivery from Germany and also the GT pack that has added so they have bumped up the total payout.

My cover has a break down as follows

Base premium: £678.00
contents cover £16
no claims discount -£200.19
NCD protection £37.18
legal protection £24.54
instalment charge £24.54
Premium to pay £441.49p

Policy cover:

Caravan and associated equipment value @ £18,000
Contents £500
Hotel and caravan hire £2,250
liability £5,000,000
personal accident £20,000

Hope this helps, rather than going cheap you have to compare like for like. I know the caravan club tend to be a little more expensive, however I have read a few stories where they have paid up with no hassle.

No offence taken. We didn't even think of it. It's just that older caravanners have the advantage of going with Saga.

I can't quite understand this "new for old" stuff but I'm ready to learn.
If you buy a new car, normally you just insure it annually and as it ages, you only get the current value should you right it off so why not the same with an Eriba?

My caravan insurance with Cover4Caravans (Alan Blunden, Southend) (4 years NCB) was:
Value: £11,000 (judging by current second-hand prices on AL's website, I shall have to raise this!)
Contents: £1,000
Awning: £500
Excess: £100
Covered for European travel.
Premium: £139.47

I thought this was high compared with my car insurance renewal quote that came this week:
Max NCB (they allow up to 9 years)
Fully comprehensive
Legal cover
Courtesy car
Windscreen cover
Personal accident
Protected NCB
Compulsory excess £80
Voluntary excess £0
Premium: £158.44 (Lower than last year's premium)

I've been on all the comparison websites and the others like Direct Line etc and I can't get anywhere near this so, for the first time in years, I shall be renewing with my existing insurers.

Both of these premiums seem good value though when compared with my annual Red Pennant 31 day multi-trip cover at £264.

You can only get new for old cover on new caravans and ones under a certain age. On one as old as mine it will be market value.

Maybe there is a niche market for classic caravans out there to be filled
You can get classic car insurance that understands that a 40 year old car is probably worth 10 times more than it was when new. You usually submit photos and bills to obtain an agreed valuation....

yes I can see that but like a car, once your new Eriba is out of the show room then it's 2nd hand and the longer you have it...........

The price you've negotiated is really good isn't it? It would appear that Towergate don't offer a no claims bonus
