Condensation

Used the Eriba this weekend and found condensation along the internal trim of the roof to the canvas. Sitting in beads and only noticed it due to a drip hitting me. Anyone else had a similar thing, and just wondering if the temp are down then should I put roof down.? Only intending to use it all through the winter and just don't want to have any problem with damp or mould.

Thanks

We get this a lot and the only real solution is ventilation probably best achieved by leaving the vents in the pop top open a little.

We noticed this too, and must make a mental note to make sure is dry before letting Bilbo have a few weeks rest.

It is common especially through colder nights, I used to wipe ours down in the morning with kitchen roll (that way, the kitchen roll gets thrown away and you are not storing a damp cloth).

You might want to ensure it's dry before you drop the roof, mould on the pop top is inevitable eventually! Usually small dots around the upper & lower attachment points. It does occur on the top attachment rail also, so check that as well

I agree with what Mr P says.

I reckon, in my humble opinion, that it's too easy to get distracted by the minutiae of all this kind of stuff.

With no disrespect to the estimable Mr Agger, I wouldn't worry about making a point of using kitchen roll rather than a cloth or that everything is scrupulously dry before closing the lid.

In comparison to the amount of water vapour generated by the occupants themselves, having an extra damp cloth isn't going to make any difference.

If you do happen to get a bit of surface mould, just clean it off.

The only way to keep a caravan absolutely spotless is not to use it at all, and that kind of defeats the purpose of having it.

The condensation drips are part of the Eriba quirks including cracking your forehead on the door and on the lower living area ( I fit under the living are so I don't suffer that one...). The smaller the van and more occupants will create more condensation on the metal strip, don't worry about it too much, just give it a wipe now and again.. The Eriba manual states that whilst living in the van the Poptop must always be elevated.

Thanks you all for your advice as these quirks are all new to me! I only noticed it when a drip hit me on the neck when I was going in the washroom and had me looking all over for where the water was coming in! thinking it couldn't be rain as it had been a dry night - then I saw the beads of condensation! Agree with all that is said and will carry on Eriba -ing!

Hi Poptp320. New member Rob M here. Interesting what your last sentence states as being brand new to Eriba Puck ownership I did wonder if, for instance, you had a particularly stormy/windy night, it were better to pull the Poptop down and secure it whilst conditions prevail but I will take on board what you say with thanks.

I also noticed the condensation issue only last week when a Couple of drips fell on to the table from the front left and realised the caravan was sloping down to that side and the water was finding it's own 'level' on the shelf under the Poptop before falling. My old caravan was prone to condensation around any metal, particularly the door so I don't think it's unusual.

Hi Rob, I have had a couple of occasions when the weather has been extremely windy and on those instances I have dropped the roof to lower the profile of the van and avoid damage to the Poptop. ...

Edit:
Also the top goes down if we are going out for the day and the weather forecast is inclement

We experienced condensation for the first time last month while touring Scotland.

Like others, it manifested itself along the aluminium strip fixed to the roof above the poptop canvas. However, the dampness spread along the fabric of the roof as a stripe about 80 mm wide, particularly down both sides of the roof. Although now dry it has left a darkish stain down both sides of an otherwise clean roof. Have others experienced this and did you manage to clean it? We tried household cleaner and it did improve it but it is still stained.

Be careful what you use to clean the Poptop canvas, I had a mark on my previous 2012 Familia and I used some warm water and natural soap flakes to try and clean it. It took all the waterproofing out of the canvas which meant I had to re-proof it....

It's not the canvas John, it's a stain on the inside of the roof.

Thats a real nuisance! I'm guessing that the hardboard? Possibly plywood that the fablon or fabric type material covers has got damp and colour has leeched into the fablon or fabric? If so, I doubt it's totally removable, not knowing or seeing the problem makes it difficult to offer cleaning advice, however, I guess you could cover it in a newer type of fablon or fabric?

Fablon as you probably know is a plastic type sticky film, so people may suggest it's not possible for a stain or water to permeate through it! It does stain and sometimes irrepairably

we air'd every day but sleep with a window on vent, if roof is down definitely use vent setting on a window,

Agreed. Had to shut the pop top in the middle of the night due to the noise from the wind....
