Without wishing to send this thread off at an irrelevant tangent, I'd like to apologise for my rather unedifying contribution earlier on.
It wasn't particularly big, and it wasn't particularly clever.

But in any case, why should a vehicle be produced which isn't suitable for everyday use by everyone? You don't get that problem with petrol so why should we put up with it in the case of diesel?
I totally agree with what you say regarding one shouldn't have to drive around for 30 minutes at 50mph but I wonder how much of these reported dpf failures is down to the vehicle make and in this, without seeing a table of occurrences versus manufacturer, I'll guess we'll never know.
But as regards the quoted text above, might I, just for the sake of this discussion, turn this statement on it's head for a moment. One could say 'well why don't petrol engines produce the same torque as diesels when like for like engine size are compared?' If they could then I for one would certainly have chosen the petrol version of my latest car but it doesn't and I therefore I didn't. Were all governments to overnight ban diesel driven vehicles many caravan owner would be right up the creek without a paddle and we won't even make mention on the number of industries or service sectors that use diesel driven vehicle. And that said, I'm not altogether sure that our Post Office delivery vans even have a dpf filter installed in the first place because the number of start/stops they execute in a day would see these filters being replaced almost on a weekly basis.
And if this VW affair results in the total death of the combustion engine as some reports that I have read think might be a possibility (I personally don't subscribe to this point of view) and we all have to switch over to electrically driven vehicles then we can all kiss goodbye to our caravans - even the smallest of Eriba's - unless one fancies camping at the end of the road that is lol.
Thanks for the feeback though - it's nice to read other folks views and perspectives in this matter.

I think we just have to recalibrate our moral compass, we,ve had the Catholic Priest scandals, the banks collapse, the libor fixing, the selling of Spanish illegitimate children, the clunck click scandle, the report on sadam's weapons of mass destruction, the Seimens scandle, Lance Armstrong and, I know I,ve missed many, VW cheating emission tests.
The world it would appear is full of people with a moral code different to our own, in the past things were left unsaid but at least today many "wrongs" are highlighted and we bear the consequences in open.

We bought a brand new VW T5 because it looked nice too..... and for our second car we bought a brand new Audi A3! Both quite likely to be affected by the scandal but hey, life is a whole lot worse for millions of people in the world.

Audi, VW, SEAT and Skoda in the UK have the Diesel cheat software.
It makes you think are other car manufactures at it as well, their silence is deafening....

For Volkswagen owners. Enter your vehicles VIN number in the place provided to check whether your vehicle is affected or not. Here's the reply you can expect in the worse case scenario:-
Dear Volkswagen customer,
We regret to inform you that the Type EA 189 engine built into your vehicle with the Vehicle Identification Number (your VIN number) you submitted, is affected by software that causes discrepancies in the values for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) during dynometer runs. Your car is safe from a technical standpoint and roadworthy.
We are very sorry to have broken your trust and are working at full speed to find a technical solution. Volkswagen will cover the cost relating directly to this repair.
We will be in touch with you directly to explain what steps are required. We'll do the necessary work at our cost.
Yours faithfully,
Volkswagen.

I have maybe a different viewpoint! This cheating kit has allowed thousands of VW owners to unknowingly fool the MOT system? Or have they been picked up on MOT emissions checks? If it's the former then surely VW owe the Government a huge payment for "cheating" Just my thoughts

I have always wondered why diesels are tested the way they are. I only watched one test and it is not for people of a nervous disposition.
The probe is placed in the exhaust pipe and the engine is revved until it smokes. Certainly above safe limits (4500 revs for my Octavia)
When driving on the road at legal speeds I dont think I have ever exceeded 2500 revs (indicated 75MPH). I dont believe that my engine produces more pollution at lower revs.
If it is the case then perhaps more government money should be invested in finding new, pollution free, methods of propelling road vehicles, such as splitting water into its component molecules. Two atoms of Hydrogen + one of Oxygen. Both flammable, only by product is water. But I dont think the petrol companies would like that much.

How odd is that? Our 2 litre TDi VW Touran fits the description of the vehicles affected by this problem yet when I put our VIN number in this morning we were notified that it is not one of the dodgy ones.

Sounds like the VW vin number checker has got some dodgy software as well.....

We are in Canada at the moment, so can't see the VIN numbers of our vehicles but we will see when we come back whether our T5 or our audi A3 are affected, or both :(

Did anyone see the BBC 2 Panorama programme last night entitled "The VW Emissions Scandal" (8:30pm) ? Fascinating.
What was interesting is that they also tested a 2015 Opel Zafira which failed miserably in all tests. Admittedly, the test was more stringent on the Opel in line with 2015 standards. The VW was a 2014 model. GM Opel strongly dispute the tests.
