Awning light / Truma electric element

We've a problem with our awning light, the service engineer seems to think there's a break in the cable somewhere as there's no electricity coming from the wire (It has previously worked fine). He thinks the only way he can fix it is by cutting a hole at the back of the wardrobe to get to the wires. Before he starts hacking away at our beautiful little Eriba, has anyone got any other suggestions?

Also, I've been quoted about £250 to have the truma electric element fitted, does that sound about right?

Thanks in advance.

Has the switch been looked at? and the fuses?

The awning light only works on hook up, was that how he was testing it?

No idea about the electric element, mine was already fitted.

My LED awning light also works from the battery, could be that over the years they have been wired up differently , Some folks would still require the awning light to work on battery if they were Wild camping.

My understanding was that it worked from mains only to prevent it from being on while being towed at night? but I may be wrong
Either way worth testing on a hookup lead before knocking holes in the van to repair it.

Mine works with and without mains hook up but it cannot be operated when the caravan is connected to the car electrics.

I fitted my own heater element. It's not difficult if you are reasonably DIY competent.

£250 is quite good, I paid over £300 three years ago.....

I camp off grid and thought my light was broken, but I have researched this and French made vans with the BIP are wired that way. I am thinking of having the mod that Aaron has, done over winter to mine.

Thanks for the replies everyone - they are all really helpful. I'd hope that the engineer had tried to get the light working on hook up but you never know!! I'll check with him. When/if it's fixed I'll give an update.

The awning light is disabled on the 12v circuit to prevent it being left on whilst towing. Clippie says the law says you may not have white light showing to the rear whilst in motion.

That, too, is the way I understand it ! Only on mains hook up to comply with 'the Law" ! !

I recently re-wired mine to a permanent 12V connection as I don't use EHU. Presumably it is not against the law to carry out that mod, only to actually show a white light when towing........reversing light excepted of course ;)

Exactly ! I think the idea is a precaution to stop the awning light to be left on, accidentally , when towing :)

Judging by the number of times you can see an awning light left on through the night and into the morning I guess it must be easy to overlook it. Then, in the full light of day, it may be hard to notice that the light is still on. The 'mains only' awning light make sense.
