Don't have one, don't want one and understand one. No Smart phones here anyway.
It's getting daft when I heard someone on radio today saying she can organise her shopping with an App, all about sell by dates and when fruit is off.
Beats me and Carole.
Put them away until after Christmas if you have one and see how life goes on as normal.

Up until a couple of years ago I would have agreed with you 100% but times change and, like the wheel, one can't uninvent things and so sometimes it pays to explore a bit and check out whether or not these gadgets can make our lives at all easier. As a result I'm now a bit of an 'App' nut and here's some that I either use on a daily basis or use from time to time but either way, they've sure made life that bit easier.
Camera - useful for those times when you need to take a quick snap and haven't got time to grab hold of the SLR - or you haven't even got it with you......road accident for example.
BankTree Mobile - allows me when on holiday (or generally away from home) to maximize on the Pound/Euro exchange rate by transferring funds from my UK bank account to my foreign account. Rates can change drastically even over a short time so grabbing the moment when the exchange rate peaks can gain me umpteen pounds.
Calendar / Memo - self explanatory.
Weather Pro - being able to obtain a 100% accurate weather forecast three hours in advance of my current location has proved itself on several occasions. At one time I was able to seek out an undercover location to park my car in advance of the mother or all mothers of a hail storm whilst others on the same campsite suffered considerable damage to their cars.
Currency converter - great when on tour.
BP Log - for recording my 3x daily blood pressure and being able to present this to my doctor during visits.
WhatsApp - useful for those time when you must contact family & friends even if it's just to say that one arrived safely. One also has the ability to send photographs etc and all at no cost unlike SMS's/Telephone Calls. When I say 'at no cost' this is dependent upon one having a WiFi connection (often free on campsites) or having a data roaming package from you provider prior to leaving home.
Mehr-tanken - shows me up to date fuel prices which often indicates to me that a station 2 km's to the left is 10c cheaper pro litre than a station 2 km's to the right. With a 58 litre tank savings are sometimes substantial.
Google Earth, Google Street View and HERE Maps (the latter can be used off-line) - useful when touring and in unfamiliar towns/cities etc.
ADAC Pannenhilfe - equivalent of your AA and the App sends your exact location and makes the necessary telephone connection in an emergency. Never had to use it yet but can well imagine how useful this would be on a dark winters night in the middle of nowhere or when touring.
My Mazda - another App that connects directly to their breakdown services and pinpoints your location.
Flashlight - uses the in-built cameras flash so that you can use the Smartphone as a torch. Used in on many occasions.
All the usual web browsers, email reading Apps and Calculator plus a host more but I think you'll be seeing my point by this point LOL.

Dead right Pete. Just been reading about the testing on the M4 of this driverless car malarkey and it's not good. Humans are humans.
Haven't got an IPad therefore an app wouldn't work and I like to use my hands and brain to create, as you do too

Freepoint UK. Great for setting up TV aerials.
Downloaded that onto my new samsung tablet looks to be a lot better than peeing about with a map and compass or trial and error like I used to do
