Hi all, being new to the forum and yet to get our first caravan, I thought that I could introduce myself and ask a couple of questions at the same time. For many years we looked forward to getting a VW type campervan. But when we saw them at the NEC recently, we realised that as far as we were concerned they were small and overpriced.
Then we spotted the Eriba stand just a few feet away and were instantly converted by these small retro looking caravans. What I soon found out is just how well they seem to hold their value, After much searching we located a troll 530 which we will take delivery of within about 3 weeks (after carport floor lowered) and we are really looking forward to getting it home.

My question is regarding security trackers, and what would you recommend for quality and price. Also, what style/make clip on wing mirrors would you recommend. Since Iv'e never towed anything before apart from a 5'x3' trailer, I will need all the help I can get.

Finally, has anyone been on the Caravan Club 1 day Towing course?, all comments etc. much appreciated.

Barny

Hello Barny

As far as trackers are concerned, I wouldn't waste my money. I realise this is tempting fate, but these vans are rarely stolen. They're far too small to be of interest to the kind of flatbed Transit-driving ne'er do wells who give honest gypsies a bad name.

If your prospective insurers are insisting on a tracker, change to a different company.

As far as mirrors go, the general consensus is that Milenco Aeros are the best. Whether you get flat (non-distorting) or convex glass is a matter of choice - convex glass gives you a wider view at the expense of accurate distance estimation.

I've never been on a towing course, but there are others here who can probably vouch for their worth.

Bon voyage

.

As previously mentioned - Milenco Aero mirrors (which I use) seem great for the job, well made and secure and apparently fit almost any vehicle. I too wouldn't waste money on a 'Tracker' - but maybe that's just me

I'm sure that Towing Courses are very good, - there are some good Videos on the Net too - but I'd find an empty car park etc. and do as much practice, especially 'reversing'

Thanks everyone, Pep'e & Ribski. I'll look at the Milenco Aero's certainly. The tracking and Towing course was/is to help alleviate insurance cost as at 77yrs with no experience or no claims bonus etc I need any help I can get.

Hi all, again. Two things, first I discovered at the last moment that my series 1 bmw was too light to tow the triton. I found someone who collected it for £300 and since it would have cost me £160 as I'd have B&Bd overnight it was worth it. I now have to locate a towing vehickle.

The van is immaculate, at just 3 months old and came with loads of stuff. However I've tried to use the Kronings mover but I cannot get it to operate. I have made sure and carried out the following.

1 Leisure battery topped up ok
2 batteries in the remote ok
3 Located the main (Kronings) box under the bed and pressed the LEARN button and then pressed the remote button to sync both.
4 Made sure van electrics turned on

But so far nothing happens. I wonder if any Kronings users have any idea / advice.

regards

barny

Is there a separate isolating switch for the mover supply? The two movers I have owned have had a quarter turn isolating switch fitted......somewhere. Should be readily accessible from outside in case one of the control relays sticks and the van runs off on its own.

How did you learn that your Series 1 BMW was too light? I was rather surprised and did a quick search http://www.towcar.info/ with the limited information available to me it said that a Series 1 BMW was a good match for a 530 Troll.

With regard to the mover not operating....did you try it with the mains supply connected? It will not function whilst connected (or 'should' not function!).

Frantone, quite right with "should not" but it is possible. Mine does and also my isolating switch is inside under the seat next to the control box. Poor installation

Hi and thank you for your swift response. I found a red plastic key that fits (after removing plastic cap) under the seat and yes, next to the main box on the other side. I turned that on but no luck, I had assumed that the drive wheels were moved to the tyres automatically but have since discovered that I have to wind them to the tyres. So tomorrow I'll do that and try it with and without the mains switched on. Also on a Kronings video(all in Danish) the operator pressed both left and right buttons on the remote at the same time, so I'll do that too.

@ Ray Lawrence, like you Ray, I too thought my series one was ok, and as a non member of the caravan club I had limited info which advised that it was ok,...ish. But as a full member I was then able to insert the exact van and car details and got a resounding "don't go there" warning. I believe it's the car weight that lets it down. Watch this space.
