Also make sure the ball part of the tow ball is free of paint, grease or any other deposits. We carry abrasive glass/sand paper with us on every trip and give the ball a rub down before hitching up.

I can't help wondering if rubbing the ball with something abrasive every time you hitch up might be a tiny bit over the top.

I'd go with a decent squirt of brake cleaner into a rag* and rub it with that. Brake cleaner will get rid of any grease, and it evaporates in a trice without leaving any residue.

You could always use a bit of wire wool if you felt that brake cleaner wasn't up to the job, but I'd be surprised if it didn't get it adequately clean by itself.

If you used emery paper or something similar before every run, eventually your towball would be worn down to the size of a marble and the caravan would fall off

* Don't do this with a fag in your mouth unless you don't mind losing your eyebrows in the ensuing explosion.

I use a scotch brite, it is abrasive enough to remove any surface rust, I also give it a squirt with some tow ball cleaner......

When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!

barny don't forget to stop at the new services on the M5 nnear Gloucester, really clean tidy and good value for a motorway, do it on the way up, that way you can determine whether it's a stop you might want to use on the way back, the same operator runs the other side and it is a mirror image just thought it might be useful

For the life of me I can't understand how you got conned into ploughing your life savings into a pair of motorway services in the middle of nowhere.

Or maybe it's that the sales of Agger's Traditional Recipe Gloucester Old Spot Roadside Sausages have tanked...

Sales of my sausage stopped a long time ago! Just after the end of "Debbie does wherever" stopped
