Hi, has anyone used or know of caravan transporters? Thinking of this method as I will have to collect from Devon for a 300 mile hike with lots of roadworks,

and two temporary traffic lanes etc and driving in the dark.....Oh, and I've never towed before.

No never used one, but seems like a good idea considering state of major roads at present. Good luck.

When I bought my Familia from Automotive Leisure I had it delivered and they charged me £1 a mile, it worked out very stress free and would have cost me almost the same to pick it up.

This firm provides a delivery service, I have never used them.

I'd look on it as an adventure.

After the first five miles of towing you'll wonder what all the fuss was about and you'll be an expert tower by the time you get it home.

Go for it!

Hi barny.

I think many of us can understand your concerns about towing for the first time. We've all been there. However I'm with Aaron Calder and Agger on this one. I'm sure that if you take your time and allow a little more space at the kerbside when you make a left turn (the van will cut the corner a little when following the car), you'll be fine.
Just remember that if you are using extension mirrors, if they go through the gap then as long as you don't suddenly change course, your Eriba will go through the gap too.
Where abouts in Devon are you towing from and to what destination? Also what size is the van and what car are you towing with?

regards

Randa

I did what Hob suggests when I picked up mine in June. Somerset to Norfolk to pick up the Eriba. Camped just down the road. Questions arising answered while still in the vicinity of the dealer and home the next day. Never towed before, but as others have said they tow very well and you soon relax.

can say the same as i did norfolkto cardiff no towing experience before other than 1 hour at the nec. eribas are a dream and you will wonder what the worry was. provide plenty of time take stops and just take turns a little more out than usuall and position wider in the road and hey presto you will be fine.

Hi all, and thanks for your response. The van is a troll 530 and I have a bmw series 1 2ltr. The pick-up is Exeter to Mileham Norfolk, 8 miles from Dereham. I've booked B&B for a Friday to collect on the Saturday as I thought that would be the easiest time on the roads. But as it took 6 hours to get home without towing after viewing it, I had second thoughts, but only because of the lorries and road works.

Still, you've given me something to think about. I may try to find a site halfway and finish the journey in daylight. Many thanks for your input and encouragement.

Nice one, Barny!

I too was very nervous about towing but after a long weekend shakedown not far from home, I towed our Triton to the South of France without incident. However, we all occasionally do daft things and one thing is certain, you never stop learning. Take things easy and remember that your towing mirrors are like a cat's whiskers; if they will go through a gap then so will your caravan.

I don't know whether you saw the thread that I recently bumped with the link to a pre-departure checklist, but you may find it useful as it will take you through all the steps of hitching up. Checklist thread I still use it every time I hitch up.

Not all of the items will be applicable to you as it is personalised to my caravan and circumstances so just ignore anything that's irrelevant.

When I first started towing, I was a bit paranoid about the caravan and car becoming separated and one tip I picked up really helped me overcome this. When you lower the caravan hitch onto the tow ball on your car, check that the green indicator shows that the two parts have engaged correctly and then, before you raise the jockey wheel to its towing position, turn its handle to raise the front of the caravan slightly. This should lift the rear of your car confirming that everything is secure. After checking this, raise and stow the jockey wheel as usual.

Be sure to let us know how you get on.

A few things that I don't think have been mentioned barny but you've probably got covered.

Does your Eriba have an ALKO stabiliser or similar fitted at the tow hitch? If so then you should either have a swan neck tow ball or a tow ball with a slightly extended neck. Also make sure the ball part of the tow ball is free of paint, grease or any other deposits. We carry abrasive glass/sand paper with us on every trip and give the ball a rub down before hitching up.
Does your Eriba have a single pin 13amp electric hitch up or 2 x 7pin hitch ups and does your tow car match?

Lots more info. on here including this:-
Tow bar fitting
Two sockets.

Hi Barny
You will be fine towing, after my initial paranoia of mechanical failure when I picked up my Puck, it was a breeze! And I had never towed before. I booked a campsite halfway home to break up the trip and test stuff - it was a great adventure and made the second trip out much less scary! Have fun!

Hi barny, I take it you have the 120d? If so we had a 320d and towed a Troll 540 with ease, by far the best towcar I've ever used (and there have been a few).

Have you thought about an alternative route? Exeter to M42 then across, just a thought, when we were at Cambridge we used this and found it much easier, it may add a few miles but I'll almost guarantee a better journey, check it out first of course
