Untitled-1.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte) Whilst sorting through some older images earlier, I came across some photographs of visitor attractions we have been to that are perhaps not that well know to folk who are touring in that area.
I thought it might be a nice idea if we could exchange information on these attractions.
However, before we submit ours, I searched for their Website only to find that it featured in this:- Are these Britain's dullest days out? . There's also a book (a stocking filler?) called "Crap Days Out".
Anyway, despite that we enjoyed it enormously so here it is:- http://www.bakelitemuseum.co.uk/index.htm

Saw that museum on an antiques program on the telly a while back.
Still have fond memories of staying up late once a week to listen to "journey into space" on the old Bakelite radio that sat on the mantelpiece in the kitchen when I was about 8 years old

I have been there a few times when visiting Minehed and the owner is a bit eccentric. When I asked him if there is anything bakelite he didn't have which he wanted he said that he would like a coffin looking at your pictures it appears he managed to get one...... I hope it fits after all that searching .
When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!

So has anyone else visited a tourist attraction that they feel is a bit quirky etc?

If you're ever over here, there's a small useum in the town. There are very scary mannequins sporting national costume..... very creepy.

About 10 years ago we visited a small Troglodyte cave system near Saumur that was inhabited until the 1930's. The cave system was also used to grow mushrooms.
The farmer/owner of the attraction, dressed in tweeds and cloth cap, walked with us and one lone young French woman to show us the caves. We don't think he had many visitors. After he explained the process of growing mushrooms, he explained to us about the troglodyte caves before inviting us to walk through them unaccompanied.
Didn't we have a shock when the strategically positioned mannequins, all dressed to resemble our host, started moving and speaking as we approached them in the semi-darkness. Very spooky. The young lady said she was very grateful for our company as she would have hated to be alone down there.

I visited the Bunker in Essex. Was very interesting although some of the mannequins there were also a bit strange but it was amazing to see the technology then that was cutting edge! and the underground system they had devised in the even of Cold War.

Well just to add another I went to
http://www.thursford.com/
Which in my opinion tries to do too many things in a small area and like most of those type places fails to do any one thing really well.
Fred Dibnah visits it in his series The age of steam because of the engine collection (a lot of which is unrestored) there is also the famous Christmas-spectacular which is held there every winter
http://www.thursford.com/christmas-spectacular.aspx
They also have an organ show
Zitat
The Mighty Wurlitzer Show
The Mighty Wurlitzer is the centrepiece of the Collection and there are two half hour shows with our resident organist, Robert Wolfe, open each day during the Summer Season at 1.30pm and 3.00pm.
And some niche market shops including one that sells nothing but Christmas decorations all year round, also a cafe that sells food and a childrens playground.
As I said earlier too many things to do any one well .............. others may like it better than I did.

If like me you've seen better days and like looking back rather than forward then its a great place to while away an hour or two.
I include these as they are the sort of things we used to restore at the workshop so always of interest to me.

You can visit the bank on the way in and change money into shillings and pennies and things for sale are available in both old and new money.
P1320295.JPG - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte) P1320296.JPG - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)
There is also a canal passing through the site and lots of industrial stuff like the factory where I started my working life.
P1320298.JPG - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)
Had fish and chips sitting by the canal (think it cost about a shilling) and you can get a ride on horse drawn transport.
P1320342.JPG - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)
Almost all of the places to see there have people in period costume who are happy to explain things to you.
Definitely A grand day out.

If you are ever near Wensleydale the famous cheese factory is worth a look with a guided tour of the factory a cafe for refreshments and a small museum of cheese making

One of my first jobs as a young schoolboy before going to school was to push a handcart full of milk down one of the streets in my home town delivering milk 7 days a week ................ this really brought back memories (countless hours carrying an 8 bottle version of these before going to school)
P1000999.JPG - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)
There is a shop there where you can buy the usual souvenirs along with the famous Wensledale cheese, I can recomend the cranberry flavour version
