Surely a blast from someones past

This is a very old watercolour I was commissioned for, by the driver of the cop car, since deceased but his widow is a good friend of Carole's. She loaned it to me to post on my website and thought an Eribaist or two may have less than fond memories of this Cambridge? on their tail at high speed.

Weren't these cars seen a lot in the TV series No Hiding Place (ITV, 1959-67), featuring the crime-busting investigations of Chief Superintendent Lockhart played by Raymond Francis?

I think I remember Inspector Blockhead (as my mother called him!) being driven around in the old Riley Pathfinder with the bells on the front.

I have fond memories of the Police Westminsters and Cambridges, I can't remembr which way round these cars appeared in these stories but they are both true!

I "borrowed" a friends Lambretta SX 225 😎 and as a young Agger I took my other mate on a ride around Gloucester, we were spotted by Plod (not difficult 2 young scrotes with no helmets) Plod gave chase but Agger thought if he went on the pavement hecould "outrun" him Agger was caught, read the riot act, got done for speeding, carrying an unauthorised passenger, no license, no insurance, got fined £25 and 6 endorsements!!!!

On the night of the Birmingham pub bombings in November 1974 Agger was in a local club just across the road from "the talk of the town?" anyway we heard a first loud bang then a second we were duly evacuated from the building and I saw coming up the road at what must of been "flat out" speed one of these Plod cars, it came round the roundabout sideways and smashed into the kerb with the rear wheel badly damaged, out got the BIGGEST Plod Sergeant he opened the rear door and out got "Sir" and fair play hey both went into a burning, smoking, falling apart building to help save others. We were asked if we would help and volunteered, but alas we were "stood down" as they decreed it better foor an all uniform presence

Frantone is right it was the Riley Pathfinder although its quite likely the others featured. However, my memories were really stirred when Agger mentioned the Lambretta SX 225 (I think it was actually 200 but maybe it was a modified version). I so, so wanted an SX 200 but eventually had to settle for a used LD 150 but it got me around until I migrated to motorcycles - and that as they say is another story. Thanks for the memory

Tony

It looks like a Wolsley to me:- Untitled-1.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte) Untitled-2.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

I used to have a Wolsley 1500 and I loved the way the radiator badge used to light up.

More nostalgia if you can take it :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmeGiiNAcoI

ps. Regarding Lambrettas, I had an Li 150 complete with a fur covered back rest thanks to my mum's old fur coat and dozens of chrome bars and wing mirrors obtained from the scrap yard. The hospital used to dump all their broken shiny trolleys there. Coke ( the drinkable variety) and beans on toast at the local Mod cafe "The Morgue".

My dad had a Wolsley when I was about 11/12 years old with which we went on holiday to Butlins. I seem to recall that it had a running board.

Out for a walk this morning in Exmouth and found this, spoke to the guy who owns it, daily runner! Sounds good, needs a wax

Hope Derek does'nt mind but I thought it appropriate to post it here rather than start a new thread

Considering your forum signature I'm guessing that you offered to do the job for him.

'chrome bars and wing mirrors'

Reminds me of the late sixties in South London. The fashion was a scooter with as many spotlights as you could fit on the front. One local copper (a closet biker) took a distinct delight in stopping any of these he saw. As it is/was compulsory for all these lights to work, he would first instruct them to stop the engine then turn on all the lights. Result, instant flat battery. exit one smirking plod.
