Does anyone on the forum still swap their road wheels around? http://www.blackcircles.com/general/tyre-rotation

We've never done it but now I wish we had. We had new rear tyres fitted this time last year (the fronts are 6 months older). The rear tyres last for approx. 40,000 miles whereas the fronts only last for about 18,000 miles.

The fronts now have an estimated 3000 miles of life left in them but unless I want to go through the hassle of getting them changed when we're abroad, I'm going to have to renew them before we go as we'll probably be doing 6000 miles + this trip.

I hate chucking perfectly good things away before their time

If they were on mine they would be 6 years old by then

No I never have changed tyres around too much hard work I just change them in pairs either fronts or rears. when the geezer doing the mot says they are getting a bit close.

Yup, but mainly as the result of having summer tyres on for 6 months of the year and winter tyres for the remaining 6 months. The tyres are generally rotated front to back on the same side but I notice that Mazda stipulate that they should also be rotated diagonally so I'll have to raise this issue with my dealer when they put my summer tyres on in mid April. It might be something that applies only to SUV type vehicles - no idea.

An alternative view from Kwik fit here

Also I watched years ago a report by Tiff Needell that was conducted by MIRA about the the safest position for new tyre and the strong conclusion was that front wheel drive front engined cars (most on Britain's roads) should have the worn tyres under the weight of the engine and the newer tyres on the rear axle to even out physical grip in the wet. In emergency braking and swerving situations, having more grip at the front increases the likely hood of spinning or losing control of the rear end, which was graphically demonstrated!
