New to us 97 triton electrical problems

Hi,
We have just trialled our '97 Triton for the first time at a very boggy site at the seaside. On arrival I managed to sink the car in the field!!
Although we weren't able to try out the awning (way too muddy) we now know how most things work, and the tractor tow the next day went well!
However, on the 1st full day at about 5pm we got back to a very smelly van. On closer investigation the converter and battery were both very, very hot. Due to a number of other issues as well (many to do with the boggy site) we decided to cut our 2 night stay short. We are now investigating the problem.
The van did come with a car battery, not leisure: today I rectified that.
The converter was replaced 2 years ago by the previous owner.
According to the guy who serviced it 3 weeks ago we need to drill ventilation holes in the bottom of the van for the battery.
My questions are: has anybody else drilled ventilation holes for their battery?
How do we use an altimeter to test the converter?

Thanks,
Alex

no not drilled a hole, our battery is gel, it is in a battery box, incase the worst happened and a leak occured
lead acid does require a vent for the gases during charging..
am not to sure what you mean by converter,
do you mean
charger
electrics in general
or an inverter which changes 12volts to run electrical items like iron, hair drier, phone charger..

Also heard it referred to as charger. I will check our battery to see if it's gell like yours. Thanks for your reply.

Hi Alex.
There's a lot of information regarding Leisure Batteries on this forum. If you go to the search engine and add "Leisure Batteries" you'll see what I mean.

Here are two useful links to be going on with :-

Which Battery?
Battery advise please help

Randa

ps if you find you're battery is not a Gel type or a fully sealed battery, there should be two small holes (one on each side of the battery level with the cell apartures). They are designed to fit small tube vents into https://www.tayna.co.uk/Vent-Tube-P7514.html. This tube should be vented to the outside. Don't know if it works however.

Just a word of caution....if you find that your battery is hot it is in a dangerous condition and should not be moved. Just disconnect the electricity and let it cool down before attempting to move it.

have just thought if you do drill a hole
make sure spare wheel is not directly underneath, if not checked, could cause a sudden washing episode with the sudden deflation underneath
