Lowering Pop Top. Too cautious ?

Question, does anybody else pull the canvas in when lowering roof ? After owning a VW California with a electric powered roof and aware of the danger of the canvas getting trapped between the scissor mechanics am I being too cautious with my Troll ? When collecting and having the handover from AL , I only recall the advice to raise front first and lower front last. The reason I ask is, a few weeks back after lowering roof I noticed from outside the canvas was showing and trapped, so now always do above. My Troll is only 4 months old so I wouldn't expect the bungy cord to be stretched and replaced. When lowering roof should you open a window or door to let the air pressure out ? Am I being paronoid, my other half seems to think so. Paul.

Looks like the elastic that pulls your canvas inside when you lower the roof needs to be tighter, Paul.

I was told (but I can't remember by whom) to always make sure the door was open when lowering the roof.

There is a definite 'bellows' effect when lowering the roof tending to blow the fabric outwards. This can be lessened by having the door opened to reduce the air pressure although the prevailing wind may counter that!
I wonder if the effect is greater in Trolls as they have more fabric?

No, we don't think so Paul.

For us, poptop lowering is always a two person job. Door open as Magpie says and me at the back while the missus takes care of the front. Carefully lower while looking all around to ensure the fabric is folding in on itself.

It only takes 30 seconds of your time after all and could save a nasty tear (and a few tears).

Thanks Aaron, but what's the rule of thumb? is there a formula or just common sense, could it be too tight ? Agh.

I confess that I started to answer your query without reading it to the end, Paul, and even added a link, since removed, to a thread about replacing the shock cord that I started ages ago when I replaced mine. I then noticed that yours is a new van. Doh!

So now I reckon that all the others have given you the correct advice, i.e. to have the door open when lowering the top. I've never given it much thought but that's what we do as the door is usually held back on the catch while we make everything secure before setting off.

My old shock cord was hideously stretched and desperately in need of replacement when I did it. Yours will be fine.

Hi Paul, if your van is new you will have the details on page 46 of the manual.

Pull the lifting roof down by the handles at the rear
Pull the canvas inwards
Pull the lifting roof down by the handles at the front
Pull all spring clamps down and lock in place.

I also make sure that all the canvas is inside the van before locking the handles in place.

I always only half open at one end then go to the other and put that one up full, then go back to the first riser and extend fully. My thought is it is not stressing to full opening one end before the other and lessens the load. I do the same when closing and have the door open.

This is the first time that I have heard that you should open the door when lowering the roof. So from now on I shall open the door. It's wonderful the things that you learn on this forum.

When you lower the top the internal volume is reduced, the displaced air has to go somewhere, opening the door or a window gives the air somewhere to escape and should stop it from trying to push the canvas outwards.

Its always worth keeping an eye on the canvas to make sure it is not trapped in the roof and give it a helping hand inside if needed.

Our Troll new in 2015 is the same as Paul's we all ways take care to make sure our canvas is all in as we have had the roof down and the canvas has been trapped outside in it. Perhaps the new van cords are not as tight as they used to be on other vans.

1st I've heard of door open when lowering the sail. I have had canvas trapped occasionally but adjusted that. Carole is too small to see that high. I guess the door is nearly always open as we are on the point of last minute actions and checks.
