How to fix this?

The screw holding the wardrobe to the caravan frame has sheared in the frame.

If I was to try to drill it out I would need to know the safe depth to drill!

You could use a stud extractor (also known as an 'easy-out'), Tony.

They are a tapered self-tapping screw with a left hand thread that you turn into a hole drilled down the centre of the screw until it grips and unscrews the broken stud or screw. I've used them on studs in engines and most recently on a small screw in a mechanical press.

The last one that I bought came with a specially hardened drill of the correct diameter for the extractor.

The skill lies in accurately centre punching the remains of the screw and then drilling down its centre. A Dremel tool or something similar makes this a lot easier.

Excellent advice, thanks Mr C. However the remains of the screw are in the hole in the frame which is directly in line with the edge of the cabinet. As far as I can work it out the only access to the remains of the screw is through the cabinet fixing itself.......

A completely off the wall idea Tony but if you can't get at the existing screw, can you fix a new batten into the tubular framework alongside the existing screw and then screw the batten sideways into the fabric of the wardrobe.

Please forgive the quality of the sketch but I'm not used to Mrs R's new version of Photoshop and mine is shut down for the night.

That's a good idea. However I am having trouble pushing the wardrobe side back flush with the wall. I have a spreader bar braced against the kitchen worktop edge but it is not moving the wardrobe carcass back far enough.
I think I may use a right angled bracket screwed into the frame and into the wardrobe side if only to stabilise it for our trip.

As the wardrobe side is only wayrock or similar with a thin laminate then, because the whole carcass will have to be forced into place, it'll probably be better to drill through the wardrobe side and use nuts, bolts and washers to hold it in place.

Cheers Roger. I was thinking the same. What do you think about this......

I thought it best to avoid the actual inserted cabinet fixing so that it could be used if a proper repair was possible.
I aim to stabilise it so that we can do our 2 months in France.

ps
How do you determine what size drill bit to use for self tapping screws?
Any further advice would be most welcome guys!

That looks good to me mate. If that doesn't hold it nothing will.

here's a drill size chart. http://www.ullrich-aluminium.co.nz/faste...ping_screws.php

Good luck.

Tony, it is utterly unacceptable (not necessarily bad luck) if it is down to poor-workmanship. If we can get enough support prehaps we can go forward in the way I have suggested in my reply to the post 'Bad Day at the Office'. I appreciate that will not rectify your problem but we might be able to put a rocket up the proverbials of the suppliers and manufacturer to reduce faults in the future.

the wc wall screw is most likely to be same size remove that to measure and use some tape on drill bit to ensure don't go beyond..

Thanks Pop.
I had a rapid email response from the service guys at AL confirming the box section frame was 20 mm.

that's good service,.

wondered if the plastic on wood edge that directs screw into frame could be turned other way still needing a hole in frame but if old screw cut flush might save drilling out removing
have never removed mine so don't know if that's easy or not to do

the other option is to get a nut to tighten on remaining threads.

will say the frame was hard going on mine when needed to drill out the corroded screws when changed the awning seal.. it may be easier to let the dealer do it..
