Hi,
We have just got back from Devon, taken our Triton off of the tow bar and tried to manoeuvre by hand into the right place on the drive but we can't move it! It's as if the brake is on, but it isn't! Has this happened to anyone else? Any thoughts?
Thank you

There is a damper (similar to a shock absorber) built into the hitch mechanism which applies the brake when the caravan "catches up to the car" under braking and an anti lock when reversing (on newer vans)

When was the last service? how old is the van?

If its a long time since service the damper that puts the brake on may not have been greased and may be stuck, also if the brakes have not been serviced for several years the adjuster may be having problems..... in extreme case the brake shoes liners may be detached and jamming.

Something to try, hitch back on to the car and pull forward a bit to extend the damper which if stuck will free the brakes.

Get a mobile service agent in as soon as you can to look at the damper and the brakes.

Thank you. It is a 97 van. We had it serviced in February. I will call the service guy today.

The other possibility is that the brake cable or cables, from the axle to the drums, has become stuck in the 'bowden cable' section. If so it may be possible to remove, lubricate and free off.

It is important to ensure the brakes don't stick on, even a little, (you may not notice whilst towing) it will cause heat build up in the brake drums and may seize the wheel bearings :(

I'm sure the service engineer will have the answers !

pull the hitch out and ensure the brake safety wire is pushed,

we use blocks under the front of wheels and push side wards the movement pushes the tyre onto block, we then handbrake, ensure blocked other front of wheel and do the opposite side wards push, applying handbrake.
its hard work, motor mover has been mentioned a few times
