Spirit Level

So..... after reading the posts about getting the van level using various methods I've stumbled across a fool proof way of judging it

Spirit level App on a Smartphone/Tablet.

The App I have downloaded is called Bubble Level & is brilliant!! It has 3 spirit levels on 1 screen so I'll just put it on the floor of the van & level away!!

Now I just need an App that will reverse my van in for me......

Nice one if I knew what an App was. We have a mini level screwed to the floor and even then use a 20cm carpenters level in the cubby hole under the seat as the screwed down version stick. Crap gadget really.

We have one of those too.

The only problem is that we have since discovered that our floor's not level

Oh Derek.

Derek, Derek, Derek. I'm really disappointed.

As a fellow member of IAAIA I'd have thought that you - yes, you - would be able to level it by eye.

It's the annual meeting of SCPWCTISLBE in June. I will be attending, and I'm sorry to report that I am duty bound to inform the society that you can no longer fulfill their requirements and that you will be resigning your membership.

You have no choice.

I'm sorry, but that's the way it is.

Standards have to be maintained.

Just in case anyone is wondering what those initials stand for (and to dispel any notion that the members of those august bodies might go round muttering masonic gibberish and showing each other their right nipple), IAAIA stands for I'm An Artist I Am, and SCPWCTISLBE stands for the Society of Clever People Who Can Tell If Something's Level By Eye.

Oh, as a lover of all things aeronautical, I thought you were a fully paid up member of this group :-http://www.iaaia.com/ and perhaps you had one of these for levelling your Eriba.

A glass of wine on the table is best, adjust van until the level is the same distance from the rim all round the glass, after emptying the "level" a few times trying to get it right you don't really care if its not.

Spirit level? If the wardrobe or fridge doors don't swing open, sorted, that's good enough for me (although the glass of wine method from 'hob' seems like a good back up).

I go along with Rob, Use the fridge and in our case toilet door, cant go wrong. If you need to fine tune Hob has the technical method.

Of course if you have problems fine tunning side to side make sure Franton, Randa and Hob are on hand to help push your Eriba up on to a wheel chock!

Having a level van is all well and good but I tend to drop my rear end slightly (ooohh matron ) in order to allow the rain to run off.

Using Hob's method you wouldn't be able to tell if it was level or not and as he says you wouldn't care!
We use a small spirit level on the floor to check nose to tail and side to side.

I think the Romans could help us with this one - use a plumb line suspended from a small self adhesive hook attached to the ceiling. For this to be accurate you will have to use a spirit level the first time you level up so as to mark the spot on the floor where the plumb weight should be pointing but after that you'll be fine

The most important reason to level the van is so that the fridge works efficiently. I put a small (150mm) level on top of the fridge door both open and closed to check.

Never assume because you have a spirit level that it is any good !!!
I have seen cheap ones that were not even any good as a straight edge never mind a level

To test one lay it on a flat surface on top of a sheet of paper and draw round it, and take a reading if the bubble is not in the middle place sheets of paper under one end until it is.
Next lift it and turn it 180 degrees and lower it back onto the outline so its in exactly the same place as it was, if the bubble is not still in the middle then its not accurate.

Its surprising just how few are. I just checked a cheap 25 cm long one and it was way out.

Another tip when levelling, the further away from the axle you do it the better (front to back levelling) as everything pivots from the axle center, for side to side levelling above the axle is probably best?

If you suspect that your spirit level isn't accurate, you can always get a new bubble for it. Ironmongers and hardware shops sell them in packs of three. They aren't very expensive at all.
