Is this normal when towing??

I feel a bit like the new kid at school at the moment so I apologise for yet another question.
I had never towed anything in my life up until a month ago so this may be a daft question for you seasoned towers. I realise I only have a small car (Audi A1) but it's rated up to 1200kg for a braked trailer which should be plenty for my Puck at about 600kg laden.
I've only towed the Puck 120 miles back home from AL and two trips away, 70 miles and 150 miles. On the return from my first trip away I noticed that sometimes it felt like the Puck was fighting the car from behind. It's difficult to put into words but it was kind of giving the car a shove from behind!! It was definitely a forward/backwards issue and not a sideways movement. It continued to occasionally happen on the second trip but not all the time.
The 120 miles back from AL and the outward journey on the first trip were perfect, the Puck handled like a dream which is why I'm wondering if there is maybe a brake or overrun system problem.
David.

It sounds like the van isn't loaded correctly and you are having the donkey effect, have look at this link which will explain. It's all a bit trial and error with a new van but when you get the weight right and the load correctly distributed the van will tow without any dramas..

Thanks for the reply. Donkey Effect!! I like that description and it does ring true.
I've read the article and it all makes sense but I've got virtually no heavy kit in the Puck. Coming from a campervan background I have always travelled with as little as possible and haven't started to fill all the lovely extra cupboard space yet!!
All I've done is put a single 3.9kg gas bottle (full) in the front gas locker and fitted a leisure battery (22kg) in the compartment designed for it just over the axle. Apart from this it's no more than 10-15kg of kit in the floor cupboards.

Chances are that your noseweight is wrong then. What are the recommended maxima for your caravan and your tow bar? You should aim to achieve as near as possible to the lower of the two figures to ensure towing stability.

We discussed this not so long ago in a number of threads so I'd suggest that you do a search of 'nose weight' to read the various comments.

I tend to agree, sounds a bit like it might be too light at the front.

Bear in mind you are sticking 1\2 ton or so on the back of the car you will feel it on there from time to time it will need a few more revs to pull away and sometimes when you tug it you will feel it tug back a bit as the tow hitch extends to its full extension after braking, plus the usual jiggles as the van hits the odd bump or dip in the road.

yup riding the waves of weight needing moving, or a bad road surface
best practice is always to check nose weight before set off,
stop after a few miles to check wheels are still there, and brakes not binding, all door and windows are shut and roof still down, and move whatever, where ever, if need be..

Thanks, I will search those nose weight threads later when I finish work.
I have got a set of Reich scales and have been playing around with the nose weight as my car has a max of only 50kg. The problem being that if it is nose weight related then the van performed best on the trip home from AL after I bought it and I found it to be 59kg on arriving home (empty van).
I have managed to get it down to 52 so still have to try a bit harder
