I wish this thread had been about before I bought my insurance 6 weeks ago!
If caravan insurance is anything like car insurance, there would be an overinflated "admin" fee to cancel my policy now so I may as well spend it on the CRIS registration despite agreeing with everything that has been mentioned about it above.

I'm also with cover4caravans and don't have CRIS registration. Their cover is very competitive and if you are a member of the Eriba Owners Club you get a further discount - every little helps!

Hi, I insured mine on Saturday with Coast, they asked for vin number, The caravan was used over the weekend thinking all ok but as the details didn't come through via email I contacted them 30 mins ago & enquired re CHRIS registration requirement. I have now been told that as it's a foreign van Chris registration is a requirement by the underwriters! I rang CHRIS to be told it's £60 & may take up to 12 weeks which would mean no insurance for the season!! I cancelled insurance for refund in full & now need another company & I am left with the thought of what if the van had been in an accident over the weekend or stolen! I think everyone needs to check the insurance they have.

When I bought my Eriba I tried to register it as my outfit with the Caravan Club, I had to provide a CRHIS registration to do this. Having joined the scheme and read all the benefits to safe guard my investment I am pleased that I registered . I think that £60.00 is a small price to pay if it helps to protect my caravan that cost many thousands of pounds.

In the end I have decided to register with CHRIS & gone back to Coast where the girl said my cancellation was not yet processed so I have reinstated the policy as even with the £60 cost of registering with CHRIS Coast beat the caravan club by approx £100. I was suprised but glad I investigated! took a while though.

Caravan Club don't need CRIS, I emailed them with the response below:

Thank you for your email.
I can confirm that the club insurance does not require your caravan to be CRIS registered. We do have vans insured with us that are pre-1992 before CRIS was introduced, and also caravans that are manufactured abroad.

Cris does not protect the caravan as such, but it does put you on a police radar to try and prevent crime and deter theft.
I am most certainly not trying to sell it, as in most things in life, "you pay your money and make your choice".
To read their brochure here, http://www.cris.co.uk/ I feel that it must be worth something or why do all new caravans sold in Britain have to belong to the scheme.

Just to put my mind at ease I checked with our insurer (Saga) who confirmed that CRIS registration is not required, nor is an Eriba imported by a registered dealer and subsequently purchased in the UK classed as an imported van - that seems to be another slippery get out.

Thanks for making me check - although I have had a sleepless night fretting about it.

Strange, when I insured with cover4caravans I was told that I didn't need CRIS, they have just taken my chassis? number in lieu of the CRIS number.

Update on cover4caravans and CRIS.
I have spoken with cover4caravans this morning to ask about the CRIS number, they have told me that they require either a CRIS number OR the chassis/serial number of the 'van. In my case the number format is VGNPUCL**********.
I explained that a friend had tried to get a quote but had been told that he needed a CRIS number, the agent said that all that he needed was either a CRIS number OR the chassis/serial number.
I asked if I needed a letter to that effect as on my schedule my chassis/serial number was shown as a CRIS number. He said that it was not necessary as all calls are recorded. So, on that basis I think I'm OK?
Is the CRIS number the same as the chassis/serial number, if it is this may be the reason that it is acceptable to cover4caravans.
Hope this helps.

Well it seems that at cover4caravans the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing! I tried there yesterday & was told I needed CHRIS registration! maybe some staff training required, anyway they lost my business.
