Silver Sides or classic?

Hi All,

Speaking to a dealer recently, we discussed whether I would be interested in the new (ish) all silver GT sides or would prefer the more classic white bobbly textrured sides.

I mentioned my concern over resilience of the silver sides and he tended to agree that they would show more in terms of dings or scratches etc. But, what was interesting is that depending on the weather, the silver sides would expand / Shrink and you could see the metal frame beneath the skn. I have heard this twice recently but would be very interested to hear from anyone on the forum who has one and whether they agree / disagree. I do like the silver sides but I'm thinking about just how they will stand up compared to the classic surface.

I'm sure this has been discussed before and if so apologies...I did look but couldn't find the original thread.

Not saying that they are all like this :- https://files.homepagemodules.de/b614104/...n3_WyKimNCE.jpg but this new 2015 Troll (German owned) perhaps demonstrates what a large plain side in silver can look like. Minimal distortion can give horrendous reflections.

There's this one, and this one as well. It does come up quite often.

They are all aluminium skinned.

I think it's all down to aesthetics and personal preference. The all-silver finish looks too bland to me and I much prefer the smooth white over silver-grey 'classic' finish of the older models. Others, naturally, disagree and opt for the latest look.

As always, yer pays yer money and yer takes yer pick.

The dimpled finish is non-reflective and intrinsically more rigid, so it won't show the effects of heat expansion or poor fitting at the factory as acutely.

As the estimable Mr C says, you pays your money and all that...

Reading the other links/posts above (thanks), I think you're right. Seems to be a fair split in support for both......

We had a smooth skin Eriba but a dimpled Burstner, I lkke the dimpled but not ghe finish Eriba use on it. I'd like a silver dimpled if I were to buy again. Cleaning a glossy dimpled is easier than the dull paint finish Eriba use, yes I have tried!

Likes to wax and have a smooth finish! 😎

To be honest it all depends which one pleases your eye, I have had a 1993 dimpled Puck, a 2012 smooth grey and white Familia 320 and now a 2015 silver smooth Familia 320.

My personal view is that I prefer the silver smooth finish, and no you cannot see the frame underneath the skin like a VPL....

We went for the silver GT finish and love it with no signs yet of any VPL however I'll keep a look out hopefully as the familia is considerably smaller then other models the reduced area will help prevent expansion wrinkles !!!
