Cookers
Ok got that. It just seems strange that members prefer to use other means to cook. But I am sure we will find our own style when we take delivery. Anyway it seems that two burners will be adequate which is what we have. We take delivery on the 24th August and then intend to go on our first trip down to Biarritz in the south of France. Very excited and by the time we get back we should have learnt at least some of the ropes. thanks all for your assistance. best wishes
Robert.

Thanks guys. But what I ask is a Remoska and also what is an induction hob?
induction hob
The most useful bit of kit of all, in our humble opinion. We haven't used our Eriba gas hob for a few years now. Apart from everything else, the induction hob can be instantly controlled and is very good for use on campsites with low amperage.

Biarritz? The south west of France is notorious for its low amperage campsites.
Just the place for an induction hob (if you want to save on gas). Also a low wattage electric kettle is a must. Most sites only offer 5 amps so a kettle and a toaster for example, cannot be used at the same time.
A useful calculation for many of our new members:-
Amps = 5
Volts = 230
Max wattage = ?
Watts = amps x volts. W = 5 x 230 = 1150 watts max at any one time.

So there we go yet another item to purchase namely a low wattage kettle! Brews and plenty of them are of course non negotiable and I had assumed that we would use the gas hob for hot water. I guess a toaster as well? Hopefully you only buy this lot once! Robert.
Just to add my 2 penny worth, another extra I think you'll need, we're in Spain at the moment with overnight temperatures in the low 30s so if it's going to be hot in France you'll need a fan, we tried a 12v car one I had, pretty useless, noisey and didn't shift much air so bought a cheap 15 euro desk fan from an Intermarche, life saver! Just remember to take a spare UK plug to fit to it, we had to sacrifice the one on our low wattage kettle and use the gas hob!

The last time that I visited an Intermarche they sold adapter plugs presumably because the French happen to visit the UK from time to time. Did you check this out?
This also applies to, Roger, of course. Why sacrifice a perfectly good extension lead for the sake of buying an adapter?

Because if we needed to buy more than one appliance while abroad then we would have to buy an adaptor for each.
By purchasing a European 3 plug extension lead (which is of course, rather less than perfectly good for UK use) and fitting it with a UK plug, it's a quick and easy fix. We do carry an adaptor by the way, as well as a spare UK plug and a spare Euro plug.

Yep, my first thought didn't have any!

Well chaps that was a truly magnificent response . We are taking delivery of the van next Wednesday so not long to wait now.
I am keen to install solar panels but will raise questions by way of a separate thread. I reckon that two burners will be OK!
In the meantime thanks and best wishes to all
Robert

If you do a search for 'solar' you will find previous threads that have discussed solar panel installations, this one, for example: Solar Panels
