Solo Wood-gas stoves

We had a bit of interest in our little wood burning (wood-gas) stove at the 2016 Summer meet (New Lodge Farm) so just in case any forum members want to purchase one, here are some details. We should point out that we have no connection with the company who produce these stoves.
The stove is made by Solo and comes in three sizes, the smallest (“The Solo”) is a tiny back-packing version, the Titan is the medium size stove and the Campfire, which is what we have, is the largest. It is made entirely of stainless steel, burns any small chunks of wood and twigs and is built to last. This size is great for cooking for up to 4 people using a cast iron pan or a dutch oven or it can just be enjoyed as a contained camp fire. The ash produced after a burn is absolutely minimal, the object of the stove being to “leave no trace”.
It is advisable to check with the camp site owners if BBQs/stoves are permitted on site. It is also advisable to stand the stove off the grass when in use as it can scorch. Solo stoves are available on the internet from Amazon or Heinnie Haynes (a very reliable on line company) and their price for “the Campfire” is £85.95 inc. VAT.
If you have any questions please contact us.

We have one of these bit smaller but burns well as a backup stove. Very compact and light

Hi Neville, The stand I use for my stove was a cast iron griddle from an old BBQ. I drilled out the holes on the 3 lugs and bent and drilled 3 bits of metal to make the legs which I attached with bolts. I didn't know how much heat the stove would generate so I cut a circular piece of ply and placed on top of the griddle. It is now charred so have covered that with a bit of alumium. I did this to protect the grass on camp sites but really the height of the stand is far enough away to just stand it on the griddle without scorching the grass underneath. I have since acquired another piece of kit - a Kelly Kettle (Scout model). Check that out on YouTube. By the way did you receive the switches and will they be of use? Dave

What a great piece of kit, I prepared everything on a table

P1030604.JPG - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

Lit it with some supermarket checkout receipts and a few twigs

Put on the pan with two cups of water in it, added a few twigs and a pine cone or 2 and watched it boil.

Then made a cup of tea

So what was left in the stove after?

P1030611.JPG - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

All together a great little piece of kit, and only used a few small bits of paper, a few twigs and five pine cones to boil enough water for two cups of tea.

And took about 15 min from start to drinking the tea.

maxresdefault.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)Glad you're enjoying it. I use Tiger Tim's firelighters to start mine or cotton wool balls with a blob of vaseline in them (the cheapest way). The TTs are available from Sainsbury's for £3 for 50 during the BBQ season.

We're getting into the realms of bushcraft now. I reckon we'll be turning up to the neaxt meet with a 12 inch survival knife each, a camo tarp to cover the Eribas and two or thre dead rabbits to cook. Come to think of it rabbit slow cooked in red wine with garlic is a bit special.
