I have been thinking for a while I should broaden my cooking options while away so I could do something different from burgers sausages bacon and eggs and maybe even something a little bit more healthy
So I had a look round my local supermarket today for things I thought I might be able to cook while away, I ended up with a few tins of stuff and some packets of rice

A lot of it still don't look too healthy but I did get the little camping stove out and do rice with tuna and peas for my dinner.......... there was a little too much so next time I will try 1\2 a pack of rice.
Still it was quite nice and I had to fight off the cat who wanted the tuna.
So I took a look at youtube for searches like "outdoor cooking" and "camp stove recipes" and there is some great stuff in there amongst the usual poorly made rubbish so if you have nothing to do for about an hour ....
This lady from Switzerland did some great food
And I just love this guy and the way he goes about living, listen to the little bit at the end.(last 4 min)
I ordered a little wood burning stove like Dave had at the meet and I have already been to the local forestry place and spent a few min gathering the fuel (better than using gas stoves) so now when its delivered I will be able to try it in the garden and take it away on trips.

Have you tried boil-in-the-bag rice, Nev?
We always take some of Lidl's own brand with us in the caravan for curries etc. You simply put the unopened bag into boiling water for around 10 mins (I think), drain the perforated bag when done and serve. Perfect, fluffy rice every time and one bag is ample for the two of us.
As a growing lad, I'm sure you will be able to polish off a bag without any waste.

I thought about boiling a load of rice, dividing it into single portions then freezing it and then adding a few frozen peas and sweetcorn, then when I go away I could just tip it into the boiling water that the spuds are cooking in.

Yay, my little stove arrived today. Not going to try it yet as its really windy outside and we have a severe weather warning for strong gusts.

Hob, you can buy the pre cooked vacuum packed ones, I do and then I add a few table spoons of water and heat through for a few mins in a pan. Just watch it doesn't go dry but it works really well with some tinned curry, chicken things.

Tried the stir-fried vegetables and rice today using baby sweetcorn, orange pepper and mushrooms and uncle Ben's rice (only used 1\2 a bag this time)
Very nice and will make a great change from sausages egg and beans

Like the stove similar to mine. One word of warning if you use damp wood /leaves your pans will go a nice matt black colour which is hard to clean off.
I bought a bag of these for when you cannot get dry kindling Werbung: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Special-Offer-...=item43f30c0ccd
The bag last ages. I just get a resealable bag and put enough in for a weekend away. One stove full will give you a good burn for 90 mins . Fir cones are also good for fuel just get them bone dry and they burn for ages
