Can you remove your spare wheel in an emergency?

The question is, if you needed to change a flat tyre on your van at the roadside, could you or the breakdown mechanic get the spare out from underneath without too much difficulty?

Remiss of me, I know, but I haven't checked mine for some time so I got underneath this morning to have a look.

The chain that retains the cradle when the bracket is unlocked was very rusty and the spring-loaded carabiner clip was rusted solid and could not be opened. It took quite a bit of brutality with pliers to open it sufficiently to remove it from the cradle. Not surprisingly, the small spring that closes the clip had rusted away.

I had expected the padlock, exposed to road dirt as it is, to be difficult to open but as it is made of brass, it unlocked without difficulty but was tight in the hole in the cradle due to rust.

Fortunately I had a short length of suitable chain and a different type of carabiner in the workshop so it was a simple replacement job.

I now know that I can get at the spare without too much trouble but in doing this job I realised that the unused spare tyre has a different tread pattern to the two on the roadwheels suggesting that it was supplied with the van when new in 2003 (gulp) as the other two were replaced in 2011 before we took delivery.

All three will be replaced next year so it's fingers crossed that I don't need to use the spare in the meantime.

I know it's impossible with your car, but we elected to carry our spare in the car several years ago. As the Touran doesn't come with a spare we insisted that VW supplied one so both spares are now carried behind the drivers and passengers seats when we travel.

Can I suggest you wrap your lock in a sandwich bag or similar and seal it with insulation tape? It keeps the lock free from road dirt.

Your spare looks new so probably, like ours, hasn't been exposed to any sunlight. A few years ago we travelled 1000 miles plus on a "new" 1998 spare tyre. Our local friendly tyre supplier had previously inspected the tyre and could see nothing wrong with it.

Ours is in the outside locker under a seat, with the EHU cable, two ramps, awning strops and pegs. steady pads. tool box and loose tools plus rags.

I have my padlock in a sandwich bag and taped upside down to the cradle to stop it dangling, i managed to catch my last padlock on the camber of the road and it bent the shackle. It was a hell of a job cutting off with a hacksaw lying on my back...
My spare tyre is also in a black bin bag to protect it even further, anther thing to consider if you have a Familia and a motor mover fitted is can you drop the cradle down fully to get the tyre out, I had to modify mine...

Derek, I'm not mentioning the spare wheel in the locker to Neil. It's the thing he misses most about our old PuckL. He used to keep all his tools, pegs, EHU cable, levelling pads plus the spare in that locker. He hasn't got one on the 420 and he doesn't half moan about it. This thread has made me worry about our spare now, it's under the van AND we have a mover fitted. Is it accessible? Who knows but I don't want to find out in the dark in the middle of France. Best have a look tomorrow.

I don't think it's a problem on a 420 Julie.

Thanks for that Tony. What with the red light and the spare wheel I haven't had time to worry about whether I have packed everything for the trip. Oh and the toilet top cassette won't refill at the mo so that's one job for tomorrow already and that's after the car has it's service. Once again we have left everything to the last minute. Planning, moi?

'Toilet top cassette'?
Do you mean the flush tank?
You should have a small green cup shaped attachment that is fitted onto the flush tank filler to allow a raised level of the surface area to enable a proper flow into the tank. Without it the tube overflows not allowing the tank to fill.

Another potential little problem is kinking of the black flexible rubber joint at the bottom of the sight glass.

Just like me...........running round like a blue a***d fly and we don't sail till Sunday. Added pressure of taking bikes which we have not done before so buying straps locks etc making sure don't fall off the back of van phew what pressure.............sympathy Julie

That's one thing I don't have to worry about, the bikes are folders so go in their bags and in the back of the car, safely held down, just in case.
Thanks Tony, again, so need to get that little green thing out and check the bottom of the glass tube. OK, think I've got it now.
Methinks we could be doing a bit of Eriba spotting in the next few weeks.

I recall seeing some Eribas with what looks like a spare wheel mounted under a cover on the rear of the van - is that a custom fitting or just on certain models - although it gets in the way of the towel rail it looks like a good idea?
