car spare tyre skinny/Gunk or full size?

This is becoming a common problem, not many new cars have a full size spare wheel they either come with a skinny tyre or a can of gunk. Personally I don't feel confident towing with a spare wheel that has the same width of a bicycle tyre.

What does anybody else use in this situation with a punture , have you bought an extra full size tyre or would you use the spare skinny/gunk?

I wouldn't have any qualms about it myself, though if it was front puncture I'd swap the wheels round and put the skinny one on the back. It's a lot more faff, but I'd rather have two proper-sized tyres on the front doing the steering, the bulk of the braking and carrying most of the weight.

I know I'm tempting fate in saying this, but I haven't had a puncture which needed a roadside wheel change in thirty-nine years.

It'll probably happen tomorrow.

Que sera sera.

One of my pet hates.

When we bought the Touran we insisted that they provided us with a spare tyre. However:-
1) They did not do a 5 wheel set of alloys.
2) There wasn't a tyre well to fit the spare in.
3) They were happy to sell us and fit a conversion kit for about 500 bucks which meant taking out flush folding seat 6 and 7 (they're only "dickie seats" anyway) and converting the space into a tyre well.

This is a job I felt confident of doing myself because the re-sale value of a 7 seater is greater than a 5 seater. However I never got round to it as, when we are touring, if we use the tyre well then 5cwt of junk would have to be off loaded before we got to the spare.

Frankly, it's a bloody nuisance and the spare is forever getting in the way when we carry it in the boot. Also if we were ever to use all 7 seats there would be no room for it. However it's not that many years ago when heavy cars/people carriers had to be fitted with special load tyres and the thought of a bit of gunk in the tyre fills me with dread. Also no good in a blow out situation. The MK 1 Galaxy was the answer. 5 alloys and the spare was underslung with a winding mechanism accessed from the boot. Oh how I loved that car.

The most stupid situation I have experienced is when we bought the Focus Estate. It came with a spare wheel well in which was placed a skinny space saver wheel and tyre. Above that tyre was about 3" of expanded plastic to make up the space !!!! We bought a proper spare wheel and it fits a treat.

The Suzuki Vitara came with gunk but I opted for a skinny however there is enough room in the well to carry a full size spare as it also has a false boot..
I rang Suzuki how much a full size spare would be and they want £550.. for that price I would assume that it is hand made in Japan out of white gold by talented Geishas.

A local tyre and wheel centre can do one for the £200 mark, my previous car the Dacia Duster came with a full size spare.

On most new cars the wheel well (if there is one) is designed for a space-saver and not a full-sized spare to save weight in the relentless pursuit of fuel economy. I would guess that your Focus fell between two stages in the car's evolution and putting a space-saver in a full-sized well was, for Ford, a simple way of reducing weight while the next generation was still in the pipeline.

The other thing is that statistically speaking (at least if I'm anything to go by), there is clearly no point providing a full-sized spare when it hardly ever - or never, in my case - gets used. It's just a waste of precious space and a dead weight.

Not only are tyres better made (and to ever-more stringent standards) than they used to be, all new cars come with pressure monitoring systems these days so there's no excuse for driving round on incorrectly-inflated rubber.

I'm not sure that there is a perfect solution. I've kind of come to the conclusion that a space-saver is about the best one going.

Having a puncture is a pain in the arse whichever way you look at it, and maybe it's best viewed as one of those irksome occupational hazards up with which you have to put.

When I was on the road a lot more than I am now with work most of my punctures came from screws nails and once clipping the kerb trying to avoid an object in the road....

Have you chaps considered an Audi A4 Convertible?

Mine has five full size alloy wheels with the spare living in a deep wheel well under the boot floor (and that's why I decided on the Audi rather than an equivalent BMW with those awful run-flat tyres that cannot be repaired or a Mercedes convertible that had a nasty little folding spare which has to be deflated and squashed in order to get it back in the wheel well.)

And all this to reduce the weight of the car so that the official fuel consumption figures are higher than if a proper spare were provided. Barmy!

By the way, did you know that if you use the tyre sealant gunk supplied with the car, the tyre fitters won't repair the tyre as cleaning out the muck to effect a repair is impossible or too much hassle?

I seem to recall that there is a water-based sealant that can be substituted that can be washed out easily. Holts 'Tyreweld' from memory.

It'd have to be one of the old ones like yours.

There aren't any new Audis with full-sized spare tyres any more.

They do, however, come equipped with a button in the glovebox which, when pressed, alerts customer services who dispatch a smartly-dressed tyre repair chap immediately.

I like Audis.

You may well find that your Vitara is NOT supplied with a 'Jack' either So more expense and extra weight

Correct, the skinny wheel Kit came with the jack at extra cost, the so called budget smart price 4x4 Dacia Duster I had all come with a jack, full size spare and an extra set of nuts for the steel wheel....

I still would like a full sized spare and a jack ! But alas I haven't got either ! At least (at my age !) I could get someone else to change it :) But what can you do with a tyre so badly damaged that a 'repair kit' won't work ?? :( :(

As far as I've been led to believe, Touran nuts are the same for alloys and steel wheels. You can read into that statement that I've not had to use my spare that I've dragged around for 60,000 miles and 6 years.

Regarding having a flat (not an apartment) but tyre either with car or caravan, us old timers rely on the various breakdown services to get us up and running again.
So no need for a jack just make the call !
