After 16 years with the same car you will notice all sorts of improvements, some good and some not so good
Things like maybe an electronic parking brake? radio with a socket for playing music from a camera card or memory stick parking censers? on board satnav? on board computer and so on.
Whatever you get will take a little getting used to and some manual reading ........... you might find some useful car reviews for whatever you choose on youtube I did when I got my new insignia.

Well, a newer version of our Touran 2 litre TDi 140ps engine. Does it have Bluemotion?
We haven't but to give you an idea, our MPG is improving the older the engine gets. With 60K on the clock if we drive sensibly within the towing speed limits we are getting 35 to 38 mpg regularly and sometimes over 40 mpg.
Solo we get around 48-50 mpg on shortish runs. When we are holidays and do longer solo runs we can often expect over 50 mpg.
Alan, you are aware that a VW Golf estate is gold dust so don't sell it too cheaply.

I would more or less agree with Randa's figures, as a neighbour bought what you test drove about the same time as we bought our Yeti. Beware though as hit 65mph and your mpg will tend to dive. Also be warned, the Tiguan will lack the nimble feel of your Golf.
On the other hand, being biased, a Yeti really should be on your radar. Based on the Golf it can be a hoot to drive, but is a bit smaller inside than the Tiguan. Our 110bhp diesel sees 48/52 mpg around town in light traffic. On a solo run light I see high 60s if kept around the 55/60mph. UK towing very high 30's/40, High speed through France fully loaded low to mid 30s. The 140bhp model is very similar, probably better when towing as the engine is not working so hard.

Um, Volkswagen 2 litre diesel engine. Have you checked to see if this model/engine is affected by the still on-going emission scandal and if so, has it had any necessary modifications done?

You also need to consider your annual mileage and usage patterns as a diesel may not be the best choice for your particular circumstances.

Regarding the VAG recall and modifications to the emissions software of affected cars.
The recall consists of the removal (deletion) of a part of the ECU software which detects when the car is being emissions-tested for nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide and modifies its own internal mapping to artificially lower those emissions for the duration of that test.
That's the only time the 'cheating' software has any effect.
It doesn't affect the car's every day performance in any way whatsoever - neither performance nor fuel consumption - and neither will it cause the car to fail its MOT.
Our MOT emissions test uses a different set of parameters to those used in the tests VW attempted to corrupt.
Putting aside Volkswagen's ethics and the likelihood or otherwise of it affecting future resale values (which are a different issue), to all intents and purposes the software modification isn't necessary, and you won't notice any differences in the way a recalled car performs because there won't be any.

Perhaps not in the immediate future but longer term, if regulations are changed etc and any recall from VW was ignored at the time of notice, it could be the case that the owner of any effected vehicle would need to meet the required mods/updates at their own costs. In my personal opinion it would make sense, especially in the circumstances where a vehicle hasn't at this time been bought and paid for, that assurances be given that any updates have already been made or that the dealer will do them free of charge upon notification being given by VW.

Surely the point of the 'recall' is not just to cancel the 'cheat programme', but to re map the engine so that it performs to the required emission standards. If this could have been met without effecting performance / consumption if would not have been necessary to have the 'cheat' programme in the first place !

This is an example, but there's plenty more.
