Parking on campsites.

New tyre on my car today, it was suggested by the tyre fitter that the old one was damaged beyond repair by running over a tent peg
This must have happened as I was leaving site for the journey home, fortunately the remains of the peg sealed the hole while I drove home.
A new tyre to match the other three on the car cost almost £160.00 with vat
So its well worth a long look at the ground on a site anywhere where you may take the car (and the caravan), it could have been very nasty at 60 mph on the dual carriageway (with the triton on the back) on the way home if the bit of peg came out and the tyre lost pressure quickly.

That's nasty - good tip though. The folks behind will just have to wait while I check the site for tent pegs in future!

Hi Nev, I have also found that been on hard standing for a long time it makes the stones stick to the caravan wheel. if you have a motor mover these can go around with the wheel and pressed hard against the roller and the tyre., I had it where the stones have got jammed between the roller and the mover body and I couldn't retract the rollers to get them out. It was a screwdriver job and an extra 15 minutes before setting off. The stones will also chip the aluminum grip on the rollers
What I do now is move the van forwards slightly then brush the stones off the tyre.
When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!

Your right in that it "used to be" we ALWAYS did it, but then I have close cropped hair, tattoo's and generally don't take prisoners, so I suspect others think I'm doing for my own well being!
I've also mentioned before and got berated for it and the use of a common word which I had been reported to admin for using, despite it being slang and not a swear word, which to my knowledge I have never used on here or any other inferior forums! Is the hoarding of black bin bags full of left overs, rubbish, etc, I have seen people loading ghe ubiquitous people carrier with half a dozen or so at the end of their stay!! Must set low standards of hygeine for themselves I guess!

I cannot remember ever having used bad language on here or any other inferior forums! Which to me means your superior to other forums, and despite being able to swear in multiple languges I choose to desist as this is a family forum, my views can be quite strong but thats because I set high standards for myself and my family😎

Quote: hob wrote in post #1That seems a bit steep, Nev! I've just been pricing new tyres for my car (235/40R18 Y 95) and Blackcircles are quoting £115 and £128 respectively, fitted for Continental Sport Contact 5 and Michelin Pilot Sport 4.
A new tyre to match the other three on the car cost almost £160.00 with vat
Out of interest, what size are yours and what did you have fitted?

But I'm paying local garage rate not big multinational price, when its flat with a hole in it and its the only place in town there's not a lot of choice.
Are your prices including vat? the vat on mine was £26.25
Tyre was £131.25 minus vat.
Edit that's not a stock item at my local garage so probably includes something for next day delivery from 25 miles away.

What is it under that Vauxhall badge, Nev? A 500bhp road roller?
I reckon I'd be doing two things. One is looking for a different brand, and the other is buying them online. Check out tyres your size here for something well-reviewed (and a name you've heard of, if you'd rather).
You could get Falkens (bloody good tyres) in that size for £106 a pop with free delivery from Tyreleader. They'll deliver to you or to a fitter of your choice.
It'd probably cost you about £15 a corner to have them fitted and balanced at the place down the road, so that's roughly £120 all in. Replace four and you'd get tyres just as good as your Contis but save yourself a total of over £120. There really is no need to pay top whack for premium brands any more. There are loads of excellent tyres out there for quite a lot less money before you even have to comtemplate a set of greasy Chinese Ditchfinder XLs.
I realise Tyreleader aren't based in this country, but that doesn't really make any difference other than waiting a couple of days extra to get them. I've used them three times without any problems at all, except once when two tyres showed up one day and the other two the day after.
I also realise that you aren't supporting your local blokes - and I agree with that principle - but I'd have difficulty justifying the kind of premium you may well end up paying if you do.
And besides - assuming that they can't compete with the online price - they'll still make sixty notes out of you for fitting them.
You need to do some more research, I reckon...

Yes they are bloody wide I was amazed, you both miss the point, I live small town Rural without a car I am pretty much housebound the nearest decent sized town is 20 odd miles away I am happy to pay a premium when the sh*t hits the fan so to speak not to be stranded.
There are other "greater" benefits to living where I do so its swings and twiddly things for me.
Edit, the car is 18 months old with 11,000 on the clock in just under a year I have done 2,500 of those...................... they won't need doing that often

We always check the pitch before leaving. Having said that, the old codger checked the pitch a couple of weeks ago but, as we were about to drive out the gate, he said he'd lost his reading glasses. We turned both vans upside down to no avail. I told him to go check the pitch again, which he did but came back empty handed. I said something like "are you sure?" he said "of course!". I returned to the pitch, knowing that they'd be there but dreading having run over them! Thankfully, there they were, intact and unmarked. So it is easy to miss things, but we do try.
