I'm guessing it's one of the newer vans as they have or had a small circular mushroom air vent in the rear lower roof. I know nothing further I'm afraid, but if they can't see screw heads etc maybe it's a 2 section piece that screws together?

It'd help if we knew which part of the vent they wanted to remove, how old the van is and what type of vent it has. If it's a square one, the inner part is a push fit up into the roof, and will come out straight down with a bit of judicious wriggling after gently prising the edge free enough to get your fingertips under.

Don't use a sharp tool - you'll just end up poking a hole in the roof lining.

The mushroom on top of the roof clips to the upstand. You can see the locating tabs if you squint along the roof surface.

That's a good point, and one I should have mentioned above. The white plastic used for these fittings - it applies to the awning light cover too - gets brittle with age and in cold temperatures.

Warming them up with a hairdryer before dismantling makes it a lot easier and lessens the likelihood of whatever it is you're trying to remove ending up in smithereens.
